I had previously posted about losing coolant, and then the problem of bubbles coming out of the radiator with the cap off. I was sure it was a blown headgasket, but after checking the compression, I figured it must be something else. Someone had talked about air in the system, so I flushed the cooling system, and refilled with coolant. I drove the car, and now this time it would come to temperature while idling, but when the engine was running at higher RPM while driving, the temp gauge would drop. I tried the heater, and it was putting out heat, and I stopped and loosened the radiator cap, and there was coolant present. I thought about it, and decided that it was acting like the thermostat was stuck open. I went to Autozone and got a new thermostat....WTF...it didn't fit the car at all, they gave me a Tstat with a flat gasket, my old Tstat had a black rubber gasket that fits around the Tstat and then fits into a recess in the housing. Autozone computer only showed a flat gasket for the tstat...I went to another auto parts place, and they had a tstat with a black rubber gasket, but it was not as thick as mine, I ended up reusing the gasket I had..weird that no one had the right gasket??? Anyway, I put the new Tstat in and fired the car up. Wow, water started pouring out of the water pump...f*:#!!!! So back to the auto parts store for a new water pump. Well, to make a long story longer, I got the new water pump installed, and everything is working GREAT!!!!!!!! I honestly think I had a weird combination of problems. The stuck open Tstat I think was causing the F'ed up water pump to instead of leaking, it was actually sucking in air and causing bubbles in the cooling system, and as soon as the water was stopped from flowing by the new Tstat, it started leaking out of the water pump. I cannot say for 100% sure that thats what was going on, but prior to putting in the new Tstat, no water was leaking out of the water pump that I could see, and after, it was pouring out...I also went ahead and put a new radiator cap on also..another weird story, bought one at Oreillys, didn't fit...bought one at Autozone, didn't fit, got a Stant brand at the local Parts store, and it fit perfectly! Am I the only one having problems with parts? The final outcome....The Blue Shoe is back on the road...YAHOO!!! |

Good job hanging in there until you got it fixed. Sometimes it does seem to be a combination of problems. And Yes I have trouble the Zone, Advance etc. Just the nature of the beast I guess. Your best bet is do your own research. Do the best you can on the web. Sometimes you can figure out the what parts will not fit and the differences between the parts. For me, the NAPA guys are the best but you still have to watch them. Again Good Job!!

Great that you got the solution. Now get out and enjoy "Blue Shoe" I had a problem getting the correct fuel filter for my 94 hatch. The local Canadian Tire stores kept trying to supply me with a large can with the nipples straight out each end. Mine, which I am pretty sure is the original one from the factory, has the nipples coming out and making a 90 degree bend at each end. I gave up on trying to explain to them what I needed. Another very strange problem I had years ago with an AMC was trying to get the correct water pump. I bought one because the original was leaking. When I installed the new one the car almost immediately overheated. WTF?? I removed the water pump and compared it carefully with the original. They were identical except for one difference. The impellers on the old one were like \ while the new one was like / . The new pump was intended to rotate the opposite way. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth trying to explain that one to the parts guy we finally figured out what was wrong. That year of car was a changeover year from v-belt to serpentine and was available in either configuration. The v-belt drove the water pump one way and the serpentine belt drove off the back of the belt the opposite way. To compound the problem, the pump I got was boxed in the wrong box.

One of the worst things is getting wrong parts. I experience this many many times working on my cars and at work when i order parts for the equipment. I know how everyone feels that experiences this. Good job finding the solution OP. Like the saying goes, "if its not one thing, its another" |
