I don't recall it being necessary to take off the water pump pully :ermm: ?
I thought you could just twist the cover in and out around the pulley with little fuss??

Nerys, it looks like you could darn near pick up that car, sling it over your back, and walk off with it.
Man you make that car look small!

What!?! I thought this was an interferance engine. I am sure I saw that in my factory manual during the rebuild. If the belt is broken and a pistionis at the top you can mess up a valve or a pistioin top. Right???

Thanks

The book does say that. My 600 page service manual says it. It lies.

The G10, and the G13BA/BB are all non interference.

You can but not on these engines as Coche Blanco points out. We have lots of members who have broken timing belts while driving, pulled over, replaced it and moved on.

IIRC the manuals say some engines are interference. Or words to that effect.

And don't follow the spark plug firing diagram in the manuals, 1-3-2 is correct. :die

That's exactly what it is. Take it off the cover and put it back on the slider. That's what allows you to put proper tension on the timing belt so you don't jump teeth later on down the road.

I don't understand what the spring is for in that assembly.

The purpose of the spring is to set the correct tension on the timing belt during installation.

But the spring doesn't set any tension. The way the book tells me to set the tension is to push the assembly all the way taught.

To install a timing belt. You loosen the bolt in the center of the tensioner and you loosen the slider tab bolt and move the slider fully upwards and tighten the bolt in the center of the tensioner and then install the timing belt. After you install the timing belt, loosen the bolt in the center of the tensioner and the spring will pull the tensioner to what is supposed to be the correct timing belt tension and then tighten both the bolt in the center of the tensioner and the bolt securing the slider tab.
