Ok, fellow Geo bothers and sisters. Here's the deal, I have 1992 Geo Metro 3cyl. auto. I put a salvage yard engine in it and ever since,
I have had a problem with the starter. 5 or 6 times of clicking then it starts or it sometimes starts on the first try. I finally bought a new starter and it still does the same thing. I'm wondering if there is a difference of the year of engine? The old engine# is G10P117470 the new # is G10P175664. I've looked under the car while my wife tried to start it and there is a definite alignment problem with the fly wheel. I loosened the starter bolts so that it sags and it seems to start every time. How can I get the right starter for this engine?
P.S. Starters are priced insanely high for this little engine. :( Heeeeeeelp!!

WELL! I just noticed that this is " NOT THE FORM FOR TECH HELP! " never mind , I'll try to find the the right forum.

Have you checked to see if the transmission bellhousing is flush with the engine? Also I think I have heard the auto trans starters are differant than a five speeds. Not sure they will mount up or not but maybe you mounted a five speed starter to a auto trans.

Welcome to the forum.

Ok, One, Two.... I'm better now.

If you still have your old starter maybe you can get it rebuilt? Can you bring the new starter back for an exchange? Definitely sounds like it's the wrong starter...

I took a metro starter to a local armature shop two weeks ago for a rebuild. Cost me 2 twenties. 40 bucks.

I can't remember what it cost me, it was a couple of years ago. I don't think it was too far off from $40 though, if not a little cheaper.

Yea, do you have the "spacer thing" in that goes between starter and transmission (I think that's what t3 is talking about)?

Metroman47 I think you're posting in a good spot, and welcome to the forum!

It is a starter for a automatic. The old starter was doing the same thing that why I bought a new one to see if it would solve the problem. I checked the bell housing alignment with the motor and it looks good. Thank you for the reply.

Yes I am using the spacer ring. I've got the starter bolts loosened so that the starter is hanging down in the back which points the armature up and it seems to be working for now until I can get the engine # ran to tell me what year engine I put in. Again, thank you all for your replies. If you all get a chance go to Youtube.com and type metroman47
in the search box I've got vids of my Geo's and one that shows why I had to swap the engine. It was knocking really bad. Have a great rest of the weekend everyone.

When you had the starter removed, did you check the teeth on your flywheel?

Yes, they look ok too. There seems to be a definite alignment problem between the starter and the fly wheel. I'm hoping I just have the wrong starter.

OK! everyone the mystery is solved! although it looked the starter aligning up with the flywheel was the problem, it seems that the problem was with the ignition switch. I bypassed the key switch and did the old screw driver trick and it started every time, so for now I put in a push button for the starter ( like NASCAR ) and all is good.Too bad I spent $ 115.00 on a new starter I can't return, but I hope this trouble shooting expensive pain in a$$. will help someone else out there. Thank you everyone for your help. :)

Push button start button. Hmmm. Got a pic or an item description? Where did you mount the button? Did it definitely solve the problem of the five or six clicks when you were turning the key?

I'm just curious. Thanks in advance.
