Hey guys, So I hit a speed bump tonight going 35 kmh, didn't really think too much of it except that I drove about 25 feet and realized that I was hardly getting any power. I was hitting the gas and could hear the engine working super hard but I wasn't going very fast and by the time I got back to the pizza joint I work at, I could smell something burning. My first reaction was that I loosened my belt (it was already in need of a tightening to begin with) but I popped the hood and something was smoking. It was pitch black in the parking lot so I really couldn't tell where but it looked like it was coming off the transmission side of the engine. We had a few basic tools that allowed me to tighten up the belt and it did help me when I drove home but only once the car was already moving, it still took me some time to accelerate from a complete stop. I only live a few kilometers from work but by the time I made it home I could smell something burning again. Once I pulled it into the garage to check it out I didn't really see any smoke and unfortunately my distributor has been leaking since day one (I've changed the O-ring twice and I put on a brand new gasket and it's still leaking) so it's hard to tell if I've loosened something else and is causing a leak in fluids. My check engine light turns and off every once in awhile, pretty sure it's my muffler but when I was driving, my CEL started flashing like a SOB so maybe I loosened something in my exhaust? I really don't know where to start with this, do you guys have any ideas? |

Crawl under the car and check it out. Are you losing any fluids? Did you knock a hole in your transmission? |

wow I'm an idiot. I just noticed that my spark plug wire was separated from the spark plug itself, no wonder I was losing power. Does that also explain the smoke though? the spark plug itself didn't look that bad to be honest, I have a spare one in the garage so I'm going to replace it anyways but the top just had a slight layer of corrosion on it that I'm sure some emery cloth could fix no problem. I'm in the middle of an oil change at the moment so I haven't fired it up to see for sure if that was the problem, I'll check it tomorrow. In the meantime, and this is totally a noob question but, is there supposed to be a gasket of some sort on our drain plug? It looks like there's some remains of one on the plug but I'm not entirely sure, I can't remember where I put my RTV sealant so I'll probably have to pick some up tomorrow when Alder Auto opens but do I really need to put some on? |

Man, it almost sounds like you lost your clutch. Is it an auto or standard? What kind of burn smell, rubber, brakes, electrical? Edited by crankcase, Nov 27 2011, 08:57 AM.

Supposed to be a copper washer on the drain plug. |

It's a standard and the smell was similar to burnt oil or rubber, which is why I thought it was my belt |

Don't know how definitave a test this would be, but see how hard it is to push it in gear. Clasic symptom is you reve motor, but no power goes to wheels. |
