Well, do suppose I was asking for it buying the absolute cheapest head gasket from rockauto, putting no copper spray or anything on it. Suppose I'll get a felpro gasket and some new bolts from autozone tomorrow. Any tips on getting all the coolant out? I suppose I'll let the oil drain over night. Turn over the engine a few times by hand maybe? Or just drain what drains and let the rest sit? Edited by Shinrin, Nov 27 2011, 11:06 PM.

As far as draining the coolant, it should be fine to open the drain valve on the bottom of the radiator. Are you wanting ALL of the coolant out of the engine? Draining it until it's below the head will let you pull the head without making too much mess. If you're not worried about making a mess of things, just unbolt the thermostat housing and let her fly. ![]() I would definitely drain the oil out of the engine just to make sure there's no coolant in there anywhere. You don't want to risk wiping out the bearings or something else. If you weren't in a hurry, you could order those reusable head bolts from 3Tech. If you could order from ebay, you might be interested in THIS KIT. |

I'm planning to take my mom to a doctors appointment Tuesday, so no time to wait on shipping. I mean the coolant that seeped into the cylinder itself, not the radiator coolant. Just draining the oil is sufficient to get all the coolant out of the oil? |

Also, from looking under my oil cap, my camshaft is scored on both side, what causes this? And any advice on what to check for my very early head gasket failure? Perhaps it was just a crappy gasket. Maybe I didn't clean the head enough, or maybe the head is warped? Thoughts?![]()

So there's coolant in the oil too? That's probably what wiped the cam lobes. After draining the oil, you could drop the pan and make sure every drop of coolant is wiped out of it. Also pull the rod and main caps and inspect them. Hopefully you have a torque wrench by now. That engine really doesn't look good right now. I wish there was something I could do to help you out more on this one. |

The idle has been getting low at stops, and the oil light coming on. The oil level hasn't been low, just idling too low. I've taken pains while driving to avoid the idle going that low, but I have seen it a few times. It's got a bit of a knock to it currently. I had it running and recorded a video right before I checked the timing and discovered the blown head gasket. http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f282/wishgranter/geo/?action=view¤t=100_7880.mp4 |
