I am considered by some to be whats called a tight person. I like a good deal and like to save money. I would really like to hear ways you save money. Whether its buying in large quanities and breaking it down or some cool idea that takes the place of something expensive. To making your own toothpaste to using walmart sacks for garbage sacks. What ever it is, if you have ideas that save you money, I would like to hear about it. If you have ideas of things that make things easier or more effective, I want to hear about them. It does not have to be about saving money. It could be something like storing something in some kind of containers. Just anything that is handy or a good idea. Thanks and as I recall some of my ways I will post them up.

I've started collecting free coffee grounds from Starbucks to mix with newspaper to use a substrate for growing Shitake and Lion's Mane mushrooms out of plastic supermarket shopping bags - both have anti-cancer properties. Sauteed with butter and garlic, the mushrooms make a nice, tasty and bulky side dish so I don't have to eat so much beef tenderloin and lobster. Edited by BillHoo, Dec 1 2011, 05:20 PM.

Did someone say shrooms? I don't have cable/satellite or internet at home. That saves quite a bit. I am one of those people who do use the Wal-Mart sacks as garbage bags in the bathrooms as well. |

Ugh oh, hope we're talking about the legal kind lmao. I save money by driving my geo metro and when i come across good deals, i try and jeww them down more on the price to make it better, never pay full price! lol,..... also, sometimes to keep from spending money, i sometimes offer labor instead of cash money. that way money dont have to be spent. Some places around here im on pretty good termswith, and sometimes takes trades on stuff, like the 2 new tires i got for stimpy a while back, the set i got a few days after i bought stimpy, i traded an ol Bunn coffee maker i got for free in exchange for 2 brand new tires, mounted and balaced.

Walmart has bigger bags behind the counter where the cashier is. They do not usually use those bags much but I have discovered if you ask them they will use them. They are large enough to use in your kitchen garbage can. Every little bit helps sometimes. |

This is exactly what I do. Why spend money on bags that you are going to throw away. (my apartment door is by a dumpster anyway so I can just throw it away easily.) Also if you have good credit you can get a credit card that gives you cash back. some will give you 5% on gas, 3% on groceries and 1% on everything else. My chase freedom gives 1% on all things and 5% on certain things-----only use this method if you pay off your credit card in full each month. As of right now they "owe" me $80! Also instead of shopping at wal mart go to Aldi's. Actually the grocery store that will give you the most savings depends on how much you need to buy. Also some grocery stores partner with gas stations and depending on how much you spend you can get $.10 off per gallon. Also you can buy different aerators for your faucet and new shower heads that only put out .5 or 1 gpm which compares to the norm of 2.2-2.5 gpm. Also you can use a bunch of coupons. my dad has started using more coupons and I think he is getting into it. I haven't tried the coupon thing yet. |

I use CFL bulbs throughout the house. Not that it saves much money, as many as I'm replacing around here lately. Hopefully by next year I'll have LED Christmas lights instead of the C7 bulbs I'm lighting the outside (and heating the outdoors at 7 watts per bulb X 200+ bulbs) with. And hopefully soon I'll be driving the Metro which might get an estimated 50 MPG and parking the Villager that's getting about 16 MPG on a good day. The Outback may only be getting about 21 MPG, but that is 26% better than the Villager. That adds up pretty quick. |

yea I think we understand the whole metros save money thing....lol As far as the cfl bulbs, I have seen very very few go out compared to the older 1s. It seemed like every week I would have to replace an old style bulb at my moms house. I really dont know how much the cfl bulbs cost, but if they are relatively cheap they would save money |

Heres one thing I do during the summer when its hot that cuts cost down a bit. When I shower, I will turn the water on for just a second to get wet then cut the water off. Then do the soaping up and scrubbing and washing the hair buisness then cut the water back on and rinse off. You would be surprised just how much water that saves, besides leaving the water running the whole time. As well as draining your hot water tank completely and it filling back up and having to heat more water. Now during the winter you freeze if you cut the hot water off! |

I make a few extra dollars just house sitting some plants. There is a real nice couple down the street and they bring me these plants to keep out of the cold. They sure have alot of them. I think they are Orka or something like that.
