Slickdeals is awesome! I see Fatwallet being referenced a lot on that site. You can get cashback using fatwallet but to be honest, I haven't used it to know how it's done. Amazon is also good for groceries. |

CFLs. Replaced all our lights about 10-15 years ago, love 'em. Wash dishes in cold water? Hell, NO! My wife gets sick to easy to risk that! Got rid of DirecTV some years ago...$70/month and we still had commercials. Use the old computer until it dies...mine is a 2005 model Gateway. Previous computer was a 1996 IBM. TracFone pay-as-you-go cellular...with double minutes phone. Works out to about $12/month. Drive old cars...the Geo, the '81 Benz, etc. No payments, only insurance to protect the other guy. No XBox, Wii, etc. In the summer, use swamp cooler (N/A in humid areas) or window A/C in one or two rooms. I have a programmable thermostat, but I don't use the programming function any more. Didn't really save me anything. Keep thermostat fairly low, use small electric heater in room that my wife usually hangs out in. NO Xmas lights, very few Xmas presents. I'd rather take a couple days and call or just visit people and spend a little time with them, rather than giving them some piece of junk that they have no use for and they'll feel pressured to keep "because it was a gift". for those seeking more from a cell phone but don't have the monthly cash. consider http://www.republicwireless.com/ its $200 ($100 with coupon code) for an android smart phone the service is WIFI and CELLULAR based (so you NEED to have a wifi connection at home already) service is unlimited prepaid and $19 a month. the way it works is with a proportional balance. the more time and data you use over "wifi" he more "minutes" you get without being considered "not good" for the network. but even with NO wifi usage you get 500 minutes 300mb data and and ?? texts (forgot how many it is) ie way cheaper than tracfone and you get ANDROID sweetness to go with it (what you can do FOR FREE with android will blow your mind !!) the more you use over wifi the more you "get" to use over cellular. if your proportions go out of balance no big deal you just get a notice to hey go back in balance if you stay out of balance you could lose the account but you will never be charged a penny overage as its 100% unlimited. I wanted to snag one when they opened the first round but I did not have the $100 in time before it "ran out" waiting for the next round of signups :-) |

Since 1985 (I took a few years off here and there during that time) I have written down every cent I spent. No need trying to save money until you know exactly where your money is spent/wasted. My best suggestion on saving money? Do not ever borrow money because that just makes a $2 quarter pounder cheeseburger end up costing $10 with interest. Fast food, movies, DVDs/CDs, fancy cell phones and electronics are the biggest money wasters in my opinion. |

My father did the same thing as Mr Rmcelwee. He could tell you where he spent every dime. I sometimes have breakfast with a gentleman who is a multi Millionaire. He carries a little book with him and logs in the cost of breakfast and any other little items he might buy. This a guy that has a airplane, a Viper a big house of the water and owns 2 very successful business. Rmcelwee is right on target. It is not about being cheap, it is about being smart. A smart person (financially) IS likely CHEAP but a cheap person is not necessarily "smart" :-) "Do not ever borrow money because that just makes a $2 quarter pounder cheeseburger end up costing $10 with interest." hindsight is always 20/20 where were you when I was 18? hehe I have been fighting tooth and nail to get out of debt for over 10 years. its flat out not easy. I barely make enough to prevent defaulting on my debt and I mean barely. the last 10 years I have paid almost $0 on my debt. all interest. They simply "raised the interest rate" faster than I could "pay it down" I kid you not every time I would figure out a way to "make a larger payment" on an account they would simply raise the interest rate to compensate for the larger payment and then leave me STUCK making the forever larger payment as the new minimum payment. They are flat out evil. Flat out criminals. I always warn anyone I can away from Credit Cards. They are Legalized Theft. Legalized Rackets. Legalized Embezzlement. They are flat out criminals "protected" by the very laws supposed to protect us. Because they have bought and paid for our lawmakers. I can not WAIT for the day I pay off my last credit card. IT WILL BE my last credit card. I will NEVER EVER take out another loan (short of financial aid this coming year) unless its a FIXED INTEREST loan. NO APR's if that means I never own a house. Fine I will live in a cardboard box. I refuse to acknowledge or participate in such a flat out criminal system ever again. I will either pay for the house CASH or not at all. Sure they "fixed" the system largely now (they can no longer retroactively increase interest rates IE existing balanced keep the interest under which they were charged which is how it should have been all along) but because our politicians were bought and paid for they had a "year" to act before the CARD ACT went into effect. take a guess what happened to all my existing debt in that year? not ONE SINGLE ACCOUNT is under 28% APR now and that is only ONE account the rest are over 30% APR. how is that even legal is what any sane person should ask. all my interest rates went from fixed 9% to 11% APR's to 30% + save one at 28% so now in order to have a prayer of paying down my debt I have to spend $12,000 on 6 months of education on the hope that a promised job will be their. if it works out I will be debt free by march of 2013. I plan to live in a single room with a single 5w LED bulb and my laptop (so I have a near zero electric bill) and no heat if need be (except pipe warmers to keep the pipes from bursting) I will live on canned veggies and oodles and noodles soup if I have too. this way I can give up 99% of every paycheck to paying off the student loan in 4-5 months and my debt in 4 more after that. sadly if the job does NOT pan out I will have added $20,000 in debt ($12k with interest) with no way to pay it off. Come hell or high water I will never be in debt ever again if I survive getting rid of this debt. you want the best money saving tip you can ever hear? NEVER EVER go into debt and RUN SCREAMING DON'T WALK from any "Credit Card" offer. The only people who should have credit cards are wealthy people. They are about the only ones who won't get screwed by them. Edited by nerys, Dec 4 2011, 12:23 AM.

Here's another tip - don't own a horse. Daughter has been taking lessons for about 5 months, my first lesson will be next week. Started looking at what it would cost to own a horse and realized I can definitely afford buying a horse, and I definitely cannot afford to keep a horse. Kind of like when I was thinking of buying a used Boxster. Found out a friend of mine owns a horse, and he owns his house outright. His monthly horse fees are the price of a mortgage so he's still broke. Edited by JellyBeanDriver, Dec 4 2011, 01:27 AM.

When my kids wanted to learn to ride horses, I got them jobs at a stable where they got a full idea of what was involved in every aspect of taking care of the animals, not just what was involved in trotting around on the back of one. They also had to keep their grades up while they were doing it. They enjoyed it enormously. |

That's an option at this ranch too and likely the reason the prices are good. She (and soon I) gets the horse from their box, brushes them, checks their hoofs, tacks them up then afterwards down, warms them up, etc. She hasn't yet washed a horse but could if we had the time. |

1) I save money on water and shampoo by never bathing or brushing my teeth. Also saves money because I don't have any friends that I have to buy presents for (since they can't stand the smell). 2) I kicked out the floorboard in my car so I can "push it" up to speed, that way I only have to turn on the engine for high speed driving (above 3mph) or if I miss when I use the "carpoon" to have someone else drag me around. 3) I bought a $490,250 "Green" EcoWashingMachine(r) TotalSystem(tm) and it saves me about .40c every time I do a load of laundry, which is never (see money saving tip #1) |

You say that for a joke but I have worked with some men that I believe they never bathed except for being caught in the rain.

Wally world has gas ten cents below advertised if you pay with Wally car or gift card ('till end of December). We don't pay for artificial sweetner, creamer, and suplement TP with paper napkins. Don't do cable, get TV off of internet. Use Magic Jack. Use fans in summer along with warmer AC setting. Use thin client (strip down computer, no moving parts, ect. 12 volts about 15 watts) to stream video to TV. Thin client also good for AMgic Jack. Edited by crankcase, Dec 4 2011, 08:53 PM.

I'm far enough out in the country that TV cable never got here and powers-that-be don't require professional trash service. I have a similar contraption that sits out at the corner of the yard until it gets full, then I tow it to the dump. It takes ages to fill and costs $10 to empty. |
