My car is a 1993 Geo Metro Hatchback with the 1.0 Liter Engine. I went through the engine, reringed it, put new bearings in it, and all new gaskets. So far I have a little less than 100 miles on it. Now it does not burn oil like before but it is low on power which is getting better as I drive it. My main concern is that if I drive it on a strait road at about 55 to 60 MPH for about 8 or so miles it will stutter a little and i get a big cloud of white smoke out the exhaust pipe. If i stay in the throttle it keeps smoking but if i push in the clutch and let it idle for a second the smoke goes away and I can drive on down the road with no issues for another couple miles. Any ideas????? |

Is there oil in your air cleaner? Could be those stinkin small/no oil return holes in the head gasket.

If this is indeed the problem, what is the fix? Could one cut or punch out the holes or just buy a new head gasket?

Yes, you can punch hole in the gasket, but consider investigating the loss of power you mention besides other simple fixes such as the PCV before pulling the head again. I suppose the problem could also be a couple of possible ring related issues, but I would think the smoking would be more constant. I don't think that new rings seating would cause the smoking problem you describe. A little smoking is normal, but it should be about over at 100 miles. You could have a thin layer of oil in the air cleaner, but any puddle would not seem right. You might get a loss of power for maybe a minute after ingesting a blob of oil, but otherwise you should have good power after a rebuild all else being OK. Even if the smoke is something else, like coolant, that probably means pulling the head again. Edited by crankcase, Dec 4 2011, 06:22 PM.

Did you hone the cylinders? Did you replace the head bolts with new ones? Did you put the oil check valve doodicky back in the block? Did you replace the valve seals? No power. Did you set the timing with a timing light? Did you check and double check you were not off a tooth with the timing belt? |

Here's my big question Did you lose the oil check valve? Mechanic left it out on my car when he did work on it, did pretty much exactly like you describe. It's a tiny brass piece with a bb inside it. Just sits in a little spot on the block. Very easy to lose. I had a catch can set up, maybe a quart bottle, and it'd fill up in a couple weeks. |

I did hone the cylinders, I did replace the head bolts, I did replace the valve seals, yes on the timing being checked with a light, I did check the timing belt at least 10 times, and I did loose the check valve. Tried buying one from a dealer they said that it could show up any day for four weeks then one day they finally said they couldnt get it. So then I was in a pinch to move and had to get the car out of the shop and just put it together without the check valve until I was able to get my hands on one. Still havent had any luck finding one yet.

I found one place online to buy it, for around $30. I went to picknpull and pulled apart three motors before I found one check valve. |
