Haven't viewed the last page yet, but are you sure your thermostat was working when that happened? If it got stuck in the open position (from the cold, or whatever) it probably wouldn't warm up no matter what you did. That happened to my 96, only in reverse. It got stuck in the closed position and the engine started overheating all the time. Trouble was that the parts warehouse I tried getting a replacement from had a different sized thermostat that wouldn't physically fit, and they tried telling me that it was OEM, and they couldn't get me the right one. So now I have to drive around without a thermostat in it, which isn't too bad in the summer, but now in the winter the engine cools right down to C as soon as I start getting up to speed.
You could either do a full radiator block in the winter and use the heater to keep the engine cool, or put back in the defective t-stat and still use the heater to regulate the temp.

If I were to put the defective thermostat back in, I'd probably blow the engine. Even with the heater going full blast on full hot, the engine temp still goes up into the red. Besides, when I took out the defective thermostat, I noticed it was bent. When I manually un-bent it, it seemed to pop back open again. Don't know if I want to risk putting it back in at all. :hmm
