If the age of the belt is unknown, replace it. Do you plan on a hone and ring job? Only takes a few extra hours to do and be sure you are set for many miles of fuel savings. I highly recommend soaking the lifters in solvent or kero and then take them apart and clean them. Carboned up stuck lifters will burn new valves in a year. I know this. |

Well there is no plan at the moment to re-ring it. When i get it apart, and I can see the walls, I will decide. As is now, I am looking fo a very fast repair, that will at least get me through the winder and into the summer. took note about the lifters, I'll clean them up. |

There's 2 coolant lines that go to the intake, these feed the coolant sensor that tells the car when its warmed up. If those lines are clogged the car will run rich, in open loop, because the car will not know it has been warmed up. Check that these lines are clear. |

You have a dead cylinder. If your going to rebuild the head then hone the cylinders and do the rings. Not much extra work. Then see if it still throws black smoke. |

Ok well I did the partial rebuild. The cylinders had a fresh hone, new gaskets were on everything. Evidence that some one else was just inside that engine. All the exhaust valves were burned to some degree. I could only find 2 in the whole state, so I got those, bolts and the gasket set. I lapped all of the valves, and reused the best exhaust valve, lapping it of course. While I was in there I cleaned out the egr passages, found a couple broken vac lines and cut the Singh grooves into the chambers. No real data on the performance, because I was running on two cylinders... My brother rebuilt the lifters because every single one was stuck... And assembled them incorrectly, which cause a 2 hour troubleshooting fit after it was all back together. We thought it was 180* out... Had no compression in any cylinder! We were stumped. Then my brother said "maybe I put the lifters together wrong and they are holding the valves open?" sure enough, he did. We got them put back together correctly, re installed and it fired right up! So two new exhaust valves, all new valve seals, lapped the valves, new gaskets all around, cut the Singh grooves, cleaned out the passages, and it runs like a top! No longer running rich, no codes, no drips or leaks. Most rewarding 8 hours I've had in a long time. Let's hope this excitement lasts for my 8 hour shift starting in 2 hours. My phone autocorrects things funky, sorry if this post is a little jacked up. Edited by merlot566jka, Dec 9 2011, 06:45 AM.

You could make that your signature. Glad you had so much fun. And yeah, that lifter issue had us going for a couple of weeks until Johnny Mullet inspected the member's car and solved the problem.

Did you re-ring? Unless the dip stick tube is loose or it is leaking at the oil filter, oil pan, cam seal (my fav after my PCV clogged ) crank seal, or distributor o-ring.How's the compression, WOT? |

Rings. At first I done a few rebuilds and got away with doing just the top end, but after doing them all the time, I ran into the bottom end letting go after refreshing the head. I do not do just the top end on any engine job anymore. |
