3 days ago, the Metro was doing fine; the pick up was good and strong and nothing out of the ordinary was happening. The next day, I noticed hesitation or bumping in the acceleration when taking off or tying to accelerate. If at a stop, when I would take off the accelerating would bounce a bit, then at times I would mash the peddle to the ground and nothing, it would just continue to slowly accelerate. It also felt as if something was holding it back. Then after a while, it seem to run normal. Then today, a little of the same thing, but not as bad.... at first! Then the slow acceleration started... I then mashed the peddle down and no rapid RPMs, just a slow steady pace like before... then it seems to have cleared up. I get to my destination and was there for about 2 hours... when I started the car, I noticed the BATT light coming on and the windshield wipers were very slow.... and no, I didn't have any issue starting the car. As I drove, the BATT light would slowly turn off then when I hit a red light, it would come back on... when I used my blinkers it would pulse with them... also the weird hesitation and bumping under acceleration and SLOW acceleration was happening again. When I got home and pulled into my driveway, I revved it up real high and the BATT light went off and the wipers were back to normal speed. I popped the hood and saw nothing out of the norm, the belts were on and nothing smoking or sounding weird. I haven't started the car since. Any ideas guys!? BTW - Before it started acting weird, I had no problem getting up to 70+ MPH, but the past 2 days, it felt as if it wouldn't even do 60mpr. Also, I've gotten less than 100mpg on a half tank of gas, starting with a full tank. When I filled up, I was at XXX805... now I have a little less than a half take at around XXX875... I usually get close to 300 to the tank.

fuel filter maybe, sounds like its clogged a bit, if you can open throttle and it wont accel fast, maybe spark plugs fouled? Pull the plugs and get the WOT compression numbers, you could have burned a valve also. Oh and btw your spelling is about as bad as mine is

sounds like your alternator is dying. if your available power is "critical" when you press the gas you might not get a response that is proper since you don't have the power to fire the coil "hotter" or "faster" now the only problem is that if this was true you would NOT be able to restart the car when you turned it off. SO my next suggestions is GROUNDS. you have a loose connection somewhere that is intermittent. start at battery goto alternator and then check coil etc.. tighten everything up look for rust/corrosion that my inhibit amps from flowing. |

I agree with nerys. Remove and clean them battery terminals and get a volt meter and test voltage at the battery with the car running and then see if it drops when the lights and stuff are turned on. Minimum charging should be 13.6 volts. |

It could be because the engine is running bad that your charging system is not up to par. Low idle would make the battery light come up if it gets to a point of almost dying. Do you have a check engine light on as well? I would have the battery tested (possible shorted plate) as well as have the charging system tested for correct alternator output of 13.6--14.2 volts with suffient engine rpms. There are many things that could cause your engine to run as you describe from fuel pressure problems to throttle position sensor as well as charging and battery problems. What about that check engine light? |

The engine is running top notch save for these issues. I don't have a low idle or at least it never seemed low, plus there is no change in the idle since the day I had no problems to now. Like I said, the engine sounds good, it's smooth, idles smooth, no surging, no dying. Clean idle. The check engine light is not coming on. Edited by RONIN LSX, Dec 7 2011, 10:02 PM.

It could be the internal voltage regulator within the alternator. Check charging system and battery as has been suggested. Early winter time has a way of crapping out old batteries, especially after having a load of wipers, headlights, and blower motor put on them. |

Before reading about the battery, the thought 'clogged cat' came to mind. If you tap a hammer on the catalytic converter, do you hear anything rattling? Just wanted to rule that out. Thanks. |

Hiya Jit! We can pretty much rule out a clogged cat for this reason. It would consistently not have power. And if it were truly clogged would not run but a very short time and die if it ran at all. Since his comes and goes and he can rev it up, his cat is Okdokie. |

I think this same thing happened to me a couple years back and I'm pretty sure a MAP sensor fixed it... could be wrong. |

But if it's an idle issue, try also testing your Throttle Position Sensor. |

As I said before, the idle is fine... it's smooth, strong, and constant - in gear and out of gear and even at start up. And just to mention, the car starts up fine every time, however, I have yet to start it since I've come home... we'll see what happens tomorrow with that. How do I check the TPS? |
