Should have three prongs. My understanding is that you measure voltage across the middle prong and either of prongs to the right or left, not sure what it should read, maybe 9v. If you don't already have a Chilton Manual I'd highly recommend getting one, it's a god sent lol.

If you can afford a little more money you can get a Factory Service Manual (FSM) for your car. I like the way Chilton is easier to digest and follow but it is for all years and all models of Metros.

Click on Search: Geo Metro Service Manual and either flip through the pages or edit the search for your year. I also search 'Geo Metro Shop Manual 91' for 1991 owners.

One little bit on Battery Voltage is "The fuel injector is driven by its solenoid coil based upon the ECM output signal. There is some delay called "Ineffective Injection Time," where no fuel is provided, between the ECM signal and valve action. Since Ineffective Injection Time depends on the battery voltage, the ECM takes voltage information to compensate for fuel injection time." Learn something new every day.

The section on Battery section there is a chart that indicates 'engine running, ignition on' Check drive belt and wiring connections at generator and battery cable. As has been already suggested. :) The other tests indicate and open or bad connection of the WHT and BLK/WHT wires on the alternator and possible a bad Alt.

Well I took it to get tested and it was the ALT; it was putting out 11.77v / No Load and 11.14v / Load. So.... while I was there, I had the shop change it out for a cool $250 with lifetime warr. Suck cuz I just paid for this semester and now I'm more than broke, but it had to be done. I just hope this car doesn't start :screw me!

I will say this though... It seems to have a hell of a lot more :nfs now, lol...
