More heat out of the heater? at 10deg F; Where are those Anchorage an Fairbanks AK Geo owners

When I leave for work in da mornin it is lately been around 10 F warms up to maybe 25 F in the day.

I have the radiator blocked off in the bumper but the heater was not putting out all that much heat so I blocked off the rad by about 80% right on the radiator but still just okay warm so I totally blocked the radiator and it is still not really nice and hot. The temp gauge shows normal heat--- straight in the middle of the gauge area--- with or with out the cardboard blocking the radiator.

Maybe just need to flush out the radiator and heater before try any thing else. I have not heard the cooling fan come on at all. I have not seen any cycline of the temperature gauge. It takes about 5 miles of driving before the guage comes to the middle range and I start getting some so so heat when the gauge is up mabe a quarter or so off of the bottom.

What think ye? Thankas U. :scared (cold)

Putting in a hotter thermostat will help.

maybe a blocked heater core...run the car for awhile...when its up to temp....feel the two hoses that lead through the firewall to the heater core...there is an "in" and an "out" see if they are both hot. or could be as simple as a thermostat...

i know from my own expierience and from what others have said...if your system is operating properly...these metro heaters will run you out of the car. its been around 15 degrees here in the am....and i usually have to turn my heater off.....too damn hot.

Yeah---don't really want to install a different thermostat(No garage and 10F and new gasget etc) hmm... next time it is warm will check the in and out heater hoses. Thanks :cold :P

Replacing a thermostat is faster than taking a dump on the commode! Its a five minute job. Going from a 180 degree thermostat to a 195 degree means 15 degree increase. Just a thought.

Follow the cable that moves when you go from cold to hot on the heater levers and see if the door is opening to let the hot air in from the heater core. Sometimes junk will drop down the defrost vents and keep that door from moving.

Sounds like your heater core needs cleaning out.
Disconnect the two hoses where they come through the firewall (in engine bay)
Hook up a garden hose and let it flush out the crud.
Some people then fill the core with vinegar and let it help dissolve the lime deposits.
Then rinse again.
Some people use a pressure washer, but I'd try the gentle method first.
After that you should have plenty of heat.

For comparison, at 0 degrees, the Sprint turbo is hot by the time the 17 year old gets to school 2 miles away.
I have a Katz heater in my 94, so it was hot when I started the car.

Yup. Either a blocked core or stuck thermostat. Based on the gauge being more or less where it should be ill go with the core.

Mine is nice and toasty after about 5 minutes. Coldest I've driven it is 18°

+1 on the heater core flush. Use CLR or rydlime or even Drano or something to get rid of the mineral deposits. Flush it first with a hose then fill the heater core with the chemical and leave it for a couple of hours, then flush with hose again. I know, I know the heater core might not take that. If it is that far gone you need a new one instead anyway.

Mine is throwing heat within two blocks and like they said it will make you leave a window open it is so hot in the car. The heater is awesome.

I have done many thrermo changes... man-- I have never been able to do one in 15 mins always something seems to take longer than expected. How about a rusty bolt that breaks off. I may still go a and get a 195 for a little more comfy in the freezy. B-)

Yep--yes I thinks it is time to fill with the chem rad clean out stuff and then run to warm then flush and fill, my house pressure goes to 85psi hope that won't blow a hole in the heater core.

21F right now, tomorrow we are going to get a heat wave and may get as high as 36F Good to wash the car and do a flush. :D :cold

My XFI milege is suffering with this cold weather I suppose--- only 51mpg.(have a warm air set up to the air filter and bumper blocked.)
Mostly hi-way miles and not over 55MPH.

is it COLD on the passenger side?

your already blocking the radiator so my first idea (its really just cooling off the engine too much) is out. solution is block radiator :-)

here is the 3 things I would check.

#1 look under the dash on passenger side. about middle of passenger space to center of car there is a squarish SOFT plastic "tube"

it friction joins on each side. this tube is VERY easily knocked out of place by passenger FEET getting shoved up their.

if its out of place your going to get ZERO to only "luke warm" heat no matter how hot it is.

solution. wiggle and worm it back into place.

#2 Clogged Heater Core.

I am not sure on the "check" for this (others chime in ?)

can we ACCESS the input and output coolant lines for the heater core from the engine bay with bare hands?

warm up car. if both are HOT your heater core is fine (see #1) if one is cold then you have restricted or blocked flow.

you could try disconnecting the heater core sticking a hose in it and run water BOTH WAYS to try and unclog and or replace it.

if both are hot and the plastic tube is "in place" properly (#1 and #2)

my next suspect (mentioned above) is your BLEND DOOR is not shifting properly so instead of cold or HOT your getting "mix" and with it being that cold it won't be a good mix :-)

when you move that lever you should hear the blend door move and hit stops with a pretty decent authority. my makes a nice THUNK when I shift it slightly quickly. its pretty clear its working and moving.

whats yours do?

The stock thermostat is about 195F, so changing it won't help unless someone put the wrong temp in or your current one is faulty.

Hose pressure should be fine on the heater core unless it's completely blocked. As long as the water can flow out, the core isn't seeing anywhere near the hose pressure.

Also, the heater core hoses can both feel hot but you can still experience poor heat caused by a heavy buildup in the core, but no blockage.

My heat was poor, but both hoses were hot. I flushed a lot of crap out of the core and the rest of the system. Using a chemical flush really helped, but the better ones want you to drive several hours total, and there can't be antifreeze in the system, so that's kind of hard to do in the winter.

Well geo boys, I bought the prestone rad flush at wally world last night, today I waited until it got above freezing and then drained the radiator and flushed with water(per prestone instructions) then added the preston flush and water to system. I then did a warm up run, upto 65 MPH and pushed the engine pretty good on hilly terrain. Surpprise to hear my cooling fan come on( first time in a month I heard the cooling fan come on) very much better heat. Then got back waited for cool down a bit and then drain and flush with hose sprayer both the radiator and the heater core. Did not see any rusty fluid come out or anything, just kind of light green water. I did take the heater tubes off at the heater core at the back of the engine and spayer on hose water through both sides. Then water in the system---warm up run and then drain again. Then filled with 50/50 mix. Then a warm up run. Outside temperature about 35F and seemed to get alot hotter from the heater and heard my cooling fan come on again. So I did have a full radiator block but cut that back to maybe 80% block-- we will see how that does. So----- ^o) seems like doing much better. I won't have it out at 10F until Monday morning.--We will see then (No leaks in the core---so far :rocker )
