5W30 is the recommended oil. I run 5w20. |

And probably most of us are using synthetic oil. I just switched to Mobil 1 and really like it.

5/30 here. Will be running 5/20 at next oil change for the winter. |

Lets think this through for a moment. Only because I want to see some good well thought out replies. On average our motors last about 135,000 miles. the cost for 4 quarts of synthetic oil and a good oil filter is about $40. Now let's do some math: 135,000/3000=45. 45*40=1800. So for 135,000miles of driving on synthetic oil with the oil being changed every 3000 miles the cost will be $1800. If you use dinosaur oil that cost will be cut in half. Take that savings and use it to rebuild your engine at 135,000 miles. And have some cash left over.

Only problem with your theory is that with synthetic you don't have to change it every 3,000 miles. Most recommendations for synthetic are in the 5-6,000 mile range.

Ok, let me rework my numbers. Tada, there would only be a $900 savings using dino oil over synthetic oil. So I would have $900 in my pocket, just enough to rework the engine with new parts and then maybe, just maybe buy another metro. I like my senario. God bless, mwebb for his ability to understand the technicalities of Alphebet oil numerology, but I think with todays oil engineers having the ability to manufacuter dino oil that is a lot better quality than what was available in the early 90's, I'm confident that sludge deposits in the nooks and crannies can be ameleorated. If I am wrong, then I will be happy to rebuild my engine time after time after time after time.........because I am confident in my ability to rebuild a G10. |

In theory that would work well. But the problem is that your engine dosent go south all of a sudden. You have to put up with a poor running engine for x amount of miles until things get so bad you have to take time to rebuild it. I dont use the trick alphabet oil but I do use a good oil that I know works for me. My objective is not necessarily about money but to have a good running engine that I can count on for many miles. Down time, dealing with machine shops and the hassle obtaining quality parts are things I try to avoid. But that is just me. If you love to rebuild engines and feel it is cost effective, go for it.

Well, shit i must be barking up a horrible tree then XD Stimpy, i bought 7k miles ago, im running 15w 40 in it, and i havent changed it or the filter in about 5500-6000 miles.... Maybe thats why it could be running like shit :p But, thats what happens when you dont have enough money coming in, cant afford to go buy some oil lmao. had to borrow money just to get plugs :p lmao

This site should probably have a pinned oil thread to catch all of the talk and links for oil discussion which I found very interesting reading as well as the links that I read as well. I am running 5/30 as the metro manual recommends. Probably better to go thinner in the winter like 5/20 or 0/20 but I have decided to go to the castrol 5/30 synthetic due to more miles between changes and I don't like all the left over goo from the dino oils. I have read that one of the reasons for the push to synthetic oils is environmental and that the sulfur in dino oil holds up better in shear force concerns.... any more info. on this. |

They wrote 5W-30 right on the oil cap, couldn't be much simpler. 0W-30 is better and 0W-20 is probably fine, I'm just a little bit nervous about summer with that one. Never, for any reason, put in anything thicker than 30. Factory recommendation for oil change is 7500 with regular dino oil. Synthetic should be good for 10,000 at least. 3,000 mile oil changes went out in the early 80's, unless you only drive 3,000 a year, or never get it warmed up. |

As usual, Woodie is correct. There is a lot of "religion" built up around oil - little of it is based on facts. Use a good quality oil (one that meets the minimum service standards on your oil cap, I can't remember off hand, API SG?) and you'll be fine. Personally I look for the Dexos 1 certification. From my research, I believe that if you keep the oil at the correct temperature (cool the oil once it reaches a certain temperature) that 0W20 would be fine, but at the temps the oil in our engines like to reach, I'm sticking to 5W30 until I install a thermostatically controlled oil cooler.
