Transporting beef cow in Metro; meat, beef, driving

I was just looking at some of the cow shares people are selling here in Virginia.

If I want to buy a half a cow for beef, it comes to about $4.50 a pound!

So I figured, "What if I buy the cow and have it processed in one of those grain states like Iowa or Nebraska.

So I looked on Craigslist and got prices and processing fees and mapped out distance and stuff.

If I spend a weekend to go out to cattle country and buy a live steer and have it made into tasty bits, I can haul back home in the Metro for a total of about $2.34 a pound.

I think a 1000 pound cow dresses out to about 700 lbs.

I'm sure 400 pounds of beef can fit in the back seat and another hundred pounds in the front (Heck! my wife is heavier than that!). Maybe if I clear out the cargo area, I get another 200 in there. 11 hours of driving, I'd have to keep the heat off or wrap in some foam to keep it all cool. Maybe wear a heavier coat.

Anybody ever do this or consider doing this?

When I was in Saudi Arabia, I saw a farmer transport 6 sheep in his BMW sedan, but they were still alive.

I have no idea if that will work, but I've seen Metro's haul a lot more than I ever expected. Just make sure you take pics! lol

Wow that seems like a long haul. Would you need to take a couple of big coolers too? Might get messy otherwise.

Grass fed beef seems to be pretty reasonable. I did a search for your area:

Craigslist Grass Fed Beef

Be a lot easier if it's closer. I'll be buying some next year or so. It's supposed to be a LOT healthier for you too.

It'll fit, I've done it, never had 700 pounds though. 400 at the most, with plenty of room left. It's easiest if you're within 40-50 miles of the processor so the meat doesn't have a chance to melt. It's basically frozen bricks that you stack into boxes or crates.

Several advantages doing it this way, you can get unusual cuts and sizes, or have it all made into hamburger and steaks. Also you can get beef that comes from a "real" farm, (grass, sunshine, clean water) not the factory farms with manure a yard deep. We raise our own cows for meat. You can too if you have some extra grass around. Get a calf and fence him in with electric wire. Feed him and water him, rotate his pasture a bit so he has green grass to eat. Great way to get started making your own food.

Remove the front passenger seat for more cargo room.

" KY Metro, the creepy part is that your wife has already been feeding you good stuff...HMMM Can you say Jeffery Damler? Just a thought... (PS, I'm just picking! I do love a good steak, but I couldn't help myself from stirring the pot! :rofl ).

I used to raise my own meat rabbits. I did not enjoy the harvesting part but they are good white meat and the manure made for good flower garden fertilizer. I have considered taking it up again with meat prices as they are.

get those disposable coolers, and get some dry ice, a 5 lb block can keep cold for 24 hours. get a couple 10 lb blocks and just set them in your geo with the windows up :D and you got a/c the whole ride home :D and maybe frost bite, or worse :p

Maybe you could make money on this adventure. On your return trip maybe you could stop off at members houses and sell some beef. Just a thought.

You better plan on an extended trip if you plan to choose a live steer, have it slaughtered and frozen. The carcass should hang for at least a week although most beef farmers prefer double that or longer. The texture and taste is not anywhere near as nice if butchered and frozen without the hanging. Think cheap Supermarket meats. :hmm There will be some weight loss due to the evaporation during the hanging. Most of the time the cost is based on pre-hang weight which means the /lb cost is somewhat higher but it is something I would not do without. Otherwise to me the meat tastes like :shit ^o)
