Hi all! Happy new year, I have a very good running 97 Metro 1.3 rebuilt the engine in chassis and have put on about 7000 miles, doesn't burn one drop of oil, not one single drop of a leak I learned many years ago how to correctly seal up and engine. I have been fighting an engine noise ever since having bought this car, rebuilt the engine, oil pump, changed lifters, and rocker arms and rocker shafts, new high quality rings and bearings. Just has this knocking/rattling/ticking/tapping sound sometimes but runs so smooth you cant feel it Idle. I want to flush out the engine and change the oil to 5W20 I am currently using 5W30 and a very thick additive. I heard you can use kerosene to flush the engine and I know there is a super awesome product from BG called Purge its about $20/qt Anyone have a good answer? |

I've used type "f" ATF added to the oil for a few miles,( say ,drive for a week) then changing it and the filter, just don't overfill the crankcase. ATF is very high detergent and about 10w oil. Automatics don't like any varnish or sludge , hence the detergent. Newer types of ATF have friction modifiers and that is why I prefer Type "F".Also , it used to be used for power steering fluid by American domestic cars. & 1 quart is a whole lot cheaper than any engine flush i've seen on the shelves! Kerosene,or diesel fuel is more drastic ,and must be carefully monitored ,usually only running the engine a minute or so to prevent more trouble than you're trying to correct. ATF is in my opinion, safer and less risky. Any one else used ATF ? |

Some where in this website I've read that and have used 'SEA FOAM' and it seems to work. if I remember right the amount to use for an oil change is 8 oz. Search this site just to be sure. |

I use MMO and 5w 20 oil cleared up a lot of engine noise etc and seems to do very good in our Pacific NorthWest climate year round. |

What is the "very thick additive" and why do you use it? |

Stop with the additives, 5W-30 is the thickest you should go in a G engine. |

I have seen people use slick 50 and it is very thick. Maybe this is the additive he was referring too. |

No, the additive I used is so thick you can turn the bottle upside down and it takes 10 minutes to even come out of the friggen bottle. I been trying to cure an engine noise that I now find out appears to be normal what a G13 sounds like. It sounds like its knocking and is gonna come apart at 60 MPH sometimes always runs perfect and very little noise at idle, I am going to flush out the engine and run 5W20 and see what happens. |

a thick additive would probably keep the oil from getting everywhere it should and would make noises more prominent. |

What year model is the car that has this engine? Is this your 97 model? Could it be you have a 98 model? The 98 and 99 model 1.3 with 16 valves have adjustable valve lash and these engine get noisy because the lash is not adjusted regularly as needed. |
