Someone nearby is selling a metro 3 cylinder engine for $200 and transmission for $200.

I'm considering buying and swapping out.

Just went through emissions and have high hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide numbers. My #2 cylinder is bad.

Maybe I should just swap out the engine.

For $200 you could buy it, swap it with yours and after some testing sell yours for $200. I think I got $300 for the last engine I sold (and it was rebuilt !).

Bill,

Which one of your cars are you talking about? The '89 or the '93?

Well, I was thinking of buying it. Going through it and doing a rebuild if necessary and then swapping it.

I think the seller said he paid $400 for the engine , but realized he did not need it.

Yea, it's not like I can start it up and try it!

Should I be able to turn it with a wrench? Do compression test that way?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just try and get it for less, if possible. Plan to do a rebuild.

In my neck of the woods engines go for 145 from the junk yard. So I suppose $200 is okay if it is already pulled and halfway clean.

its worth it for spare parts anyway, get the head rebuilt, and rebuild it while its outside the car? then install it.

Wow! Here in the great white north a cylinder head would get that from the wreckers. I picked up a complete throttle body for my 94 last week and it was $60 with me removing.
He wanted $400 for the longblock. :deal

Hard to justify a spare engine for rebuild at that cost. :O
