so last night I find a posting for an early 90s metro. 3cyl 5spd. By the pic it looks like little to no rust. So about 15 mins after posting I email (no number was posted). I get his number and call. Tell the guy I will call him after work so I can look...it was the soonest he could show it. So today I call. He is heading home from work but said I was the second person to call. Im thinking that you gotta be kidding me. So he says he will call me after he shows the car to the other guy. He calls me about an hour later and says he sold it....well not quite. He says the guy gave a down payment and would be back tomorrow to pay the rest. If not he will call me. So first im pissed I wasnt the first to call. But if you were the seller. U get two calls in 20 mins would u have taken the down payment or showed it to the next guy (me). The other guy even talked him down. So if u were the seller what would you have done?

Take your business elsewhere. Shitty move on the seller's part.

The unfortunate thing is that we, society, are a product of our own creation. :coffee A lot of people call and no show. :stoner It's happened to me more than once. If someone actually show's up, hands me money, I consider it a done deal. :deal Who knows if the next people will actually show? :dunno At least the seller was courteous enough to call and inform you what had happened. :thumb That too, unfortunately, can be rare. :'(

Your situation has happened to me twice this past summer. :smackface And the one that I drove 2 1/2 hours ended up being crap. :shit

I feel your pain & frustration. But it seems the seller was being as fair as they knew how. :hmm A voice is better than an e-mail. And a face is better than a voice. They had a face & money. That makes it perfect.

However, I would not have taken a "talked down" down payment until you had a chance to see it. Maybe. Depending upon how convincing your voice was. Why take less, when you can have more. :hmm

The guy actually seemed nice but I would have waited. I want the money at one time. If the guy for some odd reason doesnt pay the rest I know I can talk him down then.....damn its just so hard to find a near rust free metro around here. it still could have frame rust though

Tell me about it. :smackface I looked at a local 96 that looked pretty good. Exterior panels looked great at first glance. Then the rust reared it's ugly head. Totally open door bottoms, frame rot, radiator mount rot, rear a-arm & sway bar rot, etc. :O

That's why I have two of my "snow bird" neighbors looking in Texas & Florida. :news I'll figure out how to get it home when the time comes. :hmm

Keep the faith Brother. And keep the welder handy. :cheers

Why you Mutt!

Annoying, but...it's his car to sell or do with as he pleases. I've run into this type of situation many times...my favorite was the person who posted a price "or best offer"...meaning that they wanted an offer OVER what they were asking! I kept my money, they kept their car.

Thanks for the offer but unless it was dirt cheap it really wouldnt be worth it for me because I dont have truck or trailer.

When I sell things online, especially craigslist, if someone gives me the cash then it's theirs.
If they tried talking me down on something, I'd probably say, "I've got some other people interested in my asking price, can I get back to you?" but that's not everyone's choice.

It's true that he was nice enough to call you and let you know, but it would have been better if he'd have given you a heads up beforehand. Maybe it was a first sell for the guy.

My worst metro story: Guy selling an xfi, tells me to meet him in a parking lot, i do, he's late. Pulls up in an Lsi, automatic, not at all the car advertised... to make matters worse, I wasn't the only person scheduled to meet him and he wanted to get into a bidding war there on the spot. I just walked off.

You need to say in your email you have cash and can come look at the car immediately. If you get a phone number, call it immediately and set up the appointment so you can be first. I sell lots of stuff on craigslist and most people are flakes. I will hold something with a deposit but not otherwise. Too many people calling telling me they want to buy it for sure tomorrow, then never call again.

Yea he was nice. I think if I was the seller I probably wouldnt have taken the down payment after being talked down knowing someone was wanting to look at it afterward...but I dont blame him. Maybe he thought atleast some guaranteed money is better than none. what if he said no to the first guy but then I decided I didnt want it. He then would have screwed himself. alex....i did exactly as you mentioned. I buy and sell a bunch on craigslist. Maybe that guy doesnt because if you get 2 people to call in 20 mins wanting to see your car than you have leverage. I cant blame the seller though. What if the guy doesnt come back then he gets free money! Ive never had anything as bad as the wrong style. I would be pissed. I looked at a 68 el camino that the guy said had a good restoration and didnt leak fluids....well it didnt take long to notice it was a shitty resto and it was leakin oil and coolant. I gladly passed. ive also sold a 4 wheeler before where I had it posted for 2000. It needed work so I expected I would be talked down to 1500. I have this kid telling me he wants it. He asks bottom dollar so I say 1500 not a dime less. I told him several times that it was my bottom and he acknowledged. No confusion there. I explained every detail on the quad to him and he seemed happy. So he drives an hr ish comes with his gf and dad. Once he brought his dad iknew it wouldnt be smooth. I look young when im shaved so I can notice his dad just has that look of how he is gonna talk me down less. So they test drive it. Have a few minutes to talk. Then the dad comes to me and says ive got 1300 cash. I nonchalantly say no thanks. He kinda plays off like they are gonna leave. Then comes back and says meet me in the middle at 1400. I said sir, I came down 500 and told your son no less. I dont think the middle is1400. that fired him up so he stormed to the truck and left. I just laughed. The next day I sell it to a different guy for 1500. Now I dont blame the dad for trying but when I buy and come to a price over a phone if im not willing yo pay that price I wont ho look at it. If I do I will still try to talk them down in person but if they wont budge I dont get mad and usially pay the bottom dollar price we agreed on. Sorry for not going to the next line my phone sux at that
