My worst metro story: Guy selling an xfi, tells me to meet him in a parking lot, i do, he's late. Pulls up in an Lsi, automatic, not at all the car advertised... to make matters worse, I wasn't the only person scheduled to meet him and he wanted to get into a bidding war there on the spot. I just walked off.

We drove NINE HOURS round trip to see a Metro that wouldn't even make its way back up the hill to the owners house and the steering was so bad that I was scared when I drove it. The car was supposed to be perfect in every way.

I also "bought" one (probably a 5 hour round trip) through ebay and when I showed up found that there was a giant "picture of male genitalia" scratched into the back glass. The car was nothing at all like advertised either. The guy looked a little shocked when I told him I wasn't going to pay for it.

I have a couple rental properties and it's a pain in the butt to make an appointment and have no-shows.

So I usually schedule everyone to come down at the same time. If you call on a Monday, I'll tell you and everyone else to come Friday at 6PM.

If multiple people show up, I repeat to all that all it takes for me to take down my ad is $30 (non-refundable) for the background check.

If I get that, I turn to everyone else and say, "Sorry folks, we're now entering contract. If things don't work out, I'll call you within 3 days, feel free to stay and look around some more" Usually the background check will tell me whether I should rent to the person or not.

I've only had one person pay me $30 and then change their mind the next day.

With a car, I'd want full price, or at least several hundred dollars down, depending on how desperate I was to unload.

Back when I was poor (poorer?) I had to try to buy stuff on payments or barter or some other complicated setup and got beat out by guys with cash-in-hand.

Never forgot what one of the sellers said to me: "Money talks and bullsh!t walks". It hurt to hear it, but he was right. The first guy with the green usually gets the deal.

"Chicks dig me and guys think I'm cool."

I'm in the Columbus, Ohio area, and about 2 years ago I was looking for a convertible reasonably priced and found one in Pittsburgh....a 3 1/2 hour drive. The guy wanted $500 for it and warned it had a rusty framehorn....even provided pictures. I decided it was worth the risk to drive it home and told him I wanted the car. My nephew drove with me in the Elantra so I could drive back the convertible. The guy told me on the phone that although he's advertising it for $500 he's had people offer him more. Okaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy.........

I get there, and the car checks out okay. The framehorn was toasty on the passenger side, but in my estimation driveable. I test drove it about 10 miles over some bumpy roads and everything was good.

Went back to the guys house and again, he's telling me how he's had higher offers for the car. I gave him a stern look and said "Well, I appreciate you being a man of your word and agreeing to sell it to me for $500 before I made the 3 1/2 hour trip from Columbus." He sort of looked at me for a few seconds, said "okay" and we finalized the transaction.

I was bound and determined to walk away and slam the guy on local Craigslist posts, but fortunately it never came to that.

Sometimes the seller will lie to drive up the price. Other times they've been burnt by promises of people coming out to look at the car, only to have no one show up, up to several times. I can understand the guy in question here wanting to accept a downpayment because to him he would be guaranteed of the car being sold. He had no guarantee you would even call him again, let alone come out and see the car.

Kudos to the purchaser of the car being able to buy the car at a reduced price. Obviously good negotiating skills on his part and none on the part of the seller. If I were the seller, I would have at least stated another person is coming out to look at it once the purchaser lowballed him. But it can be cat and mouse in these situations.

I completely undetstand when there is cash. I think if I were the seller I wouldnt have dropped my price if I knew more ppl were interested.....and actually I did have all the cash on me at the time. But how would he know....just called about an xfi but no deal could be made. Imo he wanted too much
