Hello, Ladies... Baby Girl brought the 2K Metro (auto) over this afternoon...no turns, shifter hard to get out of Park, check engine light on. Zero trouble with this little car for a couple years I've owned it. A guy expects a little something every now & then and I have read a lot about the shifter solenoid deal prior to this. I expect this has something to do with it but there may be something else. And I have done the searches and found some similar threads but just didn't come across all these symptoms in one place. I removed all the console around the shifter, the shift knob, etc where I could see how everything looked. Well lubed still and nothing appears to be restricting it. Cable checks good under the hood, no kinks or anything worn excessively to make it stiff. Dropped the fuse box under the dash...there are no fuses labeled "Turn signals" on this unmolested car. Test light across all the fuses shows a 15 amp blown and it is labeled BACK. I assume back-up lamps. I'm looking at the manual for a 99 model similar to mine but I'm not making heads nor tails of this schematic. A Googling for the "Auto Metro stuck in Park" gets me several questions from owners that have experienced the same thing...stuck in Park, turn signals don't work while 4 ways do operate, no back up lamps. I come back here and search some more because I know this is a common thing but still haven't found the solution. Replacing that 15 amp fuse is futile as long as car is in Park. Key on, pops that fuse right now. But if I have it in any other gear position, the fuse will hold and turns work, I have back-up lights again. Shove it up in Park...pop goes the little blue fuse. Thinking all is tied somehow, I am also working my way to remove the shifter solenoid. I get it loose and wiggle it out of the way, unplug it and the shifter is smooth as it ever was now. The stuck thing was to do with the solenoid. Removing the solenoid has it's problems...shifter can be moved back into any gear without foot on brake. It locks in Park OK but a touch on the side button to release the shifter and it'll go into any gear without hesitation. I'm looking for a solenoid (Rock Auto don't list anything that I can find) but in the meantime, I'm going to let her drive it. However, thinking I've found the problem, I button everything back up and put in new fuse. OK for a few minutes, go around the block to verify, get back to garage and fuse is popped again. OK...gotta be a short in the back-up lamp wires or the turn signals. Oh yeah...the Check Engine light is no longer illuminated after the solenoid removal. Shifter is slicker than ever. I have taken the plastic caps off the old solenoid to see if anything looked burned or out of whack...all looks well but something was not doing what it was supposed to do because this little square box relieved all the stress on the shifting mechanism. If you've read this far, you may have experienced this. If you have...chime in and save me a lot of hunting time. Where's my likely problem for the turn signal issue? Thanks. |

Is the problem with the 2000? If so, try your search starting here (Scroll to Power Distribution (2 of 2) ). Notice the fuse block in dashed lines about half way down. It shows the "Back Fuse" connection to back up lights or transaxle range switch (for automatic??). Try disconnecting stuff as best as possible to see if the short goes away. I am guessing here but based on your description I'd pull apart the tail lights looking for corrosion in the bulb sockets. My thinking is that that part of the assembly is causing your fuse to pop which is then creating the rest of your difficulties. Good Luck! |

Hello, I know this an old post, but I am experiencing the exact same same symptoms, did you ever come to finding out the issue and fixing it? Thanks for any help. Larry |

Just my $.02...try unplugging the tail lights connectors ( one at a time ) and see if the fuse blows, if it doesn't, check the back-up light socket for corrosion or the wiring harness for a short to ground on the side unplugged...next thing to check is unplug the shift selector at the transmission and see if the fuse blows...if it doesn't then most likely the shift selector needs to be repaired or replaced...
