Dragon speech to text software

Anybody know anything about this? Or any other one, it's just that Dragon seems to be top-o-the-heap. My wife has decided she needs this, although I'm sure she'll give it up halfway through the training process. I see there's something built into Windows 7, but I'm stuck at XP, that's no help. If I could download something to have her try and give up on, might save us the $50.

I have a friend who is japanese. He does not know and cannot type english very well. I installed dragon naturally speaking for him. It took him a while to get it trained but he does quit well with it now. For some this kind of software is a must. Myself, I can type faster than fooling with speech software so I have no need for it. If she does get it and get it trained to her, be sure to tell her to save her profile and burn it to a cd, in case the computer goes down or the program gets jacked up and you need to reinstall it. That will save her from having to do all the training again. As for your wife wanting it. How many things do you get that you want? Go ahead and let her get it. I used to complain at times when my wife bought some things, then I realized most of the time the things she decides to buy turn out to be a real smart decision.

Pretty much what EDG said. As far the software itself goes, it requires training, it works best when you speak slowly and clearly, any proficient typist can run circles around it, it will still make errors and need to be checked.

As far as your wife goes, ultimately what is $50. in the grand scheme of things, your wife is your wife and we know she is worth far more to you than that :)

The software requires minimal training (I use it on my tablet and will be installing it on my dad's laptop)

now the more training you give it the higher the accuracy and you can hit 95+% accuracy (that is really really good)

if you use a lot of uncommon words you will need to add them to your dictionary so it "gets them" next time you say them. for example I say NERYS a lot since its my e-mail and domain name so I had to add that.

its very very good software. its a but of a resource pig I would suggest mid level P4 or better and a good amount of ram or its going to slow your system down.

if your running anything dual core or better or 2gb ram or better you will be absolutely fine.

be sure to use a HEADSET mic. IE one you wear on your head with a BOOM. this dramatically improves accuracy of translation.

if you have a REALLY quite room you can get away with a desktop boom mic

something like this

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Labtec-Desktop-Microphone-600/dp/B000O7K4LO

I am very impressed with the software. assign a "hot key" (F12 is popular but not usable on most laptops so find another rarely used key)

go through initial training. some people speak just the right way and need no more training to be satisfied.

otherwise every couple days run through another training session when time allows. over time accuracy gets AMAZING and FAST.

you will enjoy the software I do.

I type faster than I talk so on the desktop I type. but on the tablet typing is a ROYAL PITA with the on screen keyboard so its wonderful.

(speak slowly and clearly) Bogs

My friend speaks some english words and they sound nothing like what the word sounds like in its correct pronunciation. The key is to speak the word the same everytime you say it. The word may not sound like it is supposed to but the dragon teaches itself that the word you are saying aligns with the correct word. So clearly and exactly the same everytime is the key to get the most out of speech software.

no actually this is usually not good advice and is usually why dragon has trouble with some people. UNLIKE normal voice recognition where you speak one word at a time

THIS - IS - HOW - YOU - SPEAK

this works worse on dragon. it uses grammer and syntax to help improve accuracy so as the name says you want to speak NATURALLY.

nice fluid (not fast not slow) smooth conversational speech. enunciate clearly but don't emphasize.

just "talk" and as you train it you will be impressed!

I was making reference to what bogs said. My advice is to speak your words clearly and exactly the same every time to get the most out of your software. If you say a word with a little differant slang to it each time you say it instead of speaking it the same every time, you are not going to achieve great results.

Okay, thanks for your input guys. Don't see any alternative products suggested here, so I guess I'll just get the $50 Dragon. Of course, you're right about the "what's $50 for marital tranquility?" concept. Nerys, we have a Logitec Webcam with microphone built in, is that likely to case trouble? Do we really need the headset boom mic?

cause trouble no - not be as accurate maybe. the quieter your room and the better the speaker the less important the mic is if its a decent mic.

you got it to use it and see how it goes.
