My brother traded me a 88CRX HF and $1500 for a 93 metro that I rebuilt back in 08. He drove it up from Arizona at 85 mph and got 49 mpg. The only problems with it was that it didn't have a/c and it had a real bad cold knock to it. I think the wrist pins were worn out because it had 225000 miles on it. I ended up selling it for $1200. The main problem I can think of is trying to find parts for it |

You nailed it horn. I gave up pretty quickly on both the VX & HF because 95% were molested or crap. My friends owned an HF & loved it. It had 54k miles on it & they regretfully sold it for $3k in '04 or '05 to some high school kid after they "upgraded" to a Honda Civic Hybrid. They were getting older and wanted something they could haul other people in and still get "good" gas mileage. They averaged ~52 mpg. |

The CRX HF was the best gas sipper Honda ever made. I have worked on them when I was working at Honda and I have to say that the engine is bullet proof. We never had to do anything on those other than the usual maintenance , brakes, light bulbs maybe a clutch now an then. I would trade my 99 Metro in a heart beat for one that was stock. Every time I've searched for one I end up finding an HF with a B series engine swap or a H20 or H22. They are getting harder and harder to find .That goes the same for the VX....You see the problem is the reason we like them is that they are light and that's the reason the tuners are after them also. But wait til gas goes up to 4-5 bucks a pop, they'll be looking in the barn for those D15B6. |

I had a girlfriend who had one back in the day. She loved it. If you can find one that hasn't been punked out and the price is good, nab it. Nice, unfu#ked vintage Hondas are getting really, really tough to find. Just make sure you put full coverage on it, and drop your deductible down as far as it will go. IT WILL GET STOLEN. Don't ask me how I know.... |

ohhh, great thread.... Confession - I'm a huge Honda fan, as long as I can get it for a 1000 dollars or less. IMHO a Honda is going to hold up a ton better to abuse, I know this because I generally end up with cars that have driven hard and put up wet. The people that have Geo's that go 400,000 plus miles are ones that take seem to take exceptional care of things, in contrast to the "disposable" car myth behind Geo's. That said, I have driven a 91 HF, and found it to be less driveable and get worse FE than my Metro. So, my research shows that 87 was the best year for the HF, as it is still 1713lbs, as they added FI and other things, it just kept gaining weight. I do think a stock HF is going to hit 50mpg if I drive the same as my metro. However, it is REALLY hard to find info on driving a CRX for fuel economy. If you spend any time on Honda sites, all you get is "this is the best motor swap for you" so I'm kind of shocked that I can't find any info on economy mods. (I was looking for a economy cam for my 87 DX model, and the first Google hit is for 3tech) It is also so hard to find one that is not molested, I look at some and all I can think is ![]() Another pet peeve is the ones that are dx models that people try to pass off as hf, either through ignorance or deceit. I bought a my 87 DX because it was on CL as a HF, but it was super clean and 400 bucks. (needs a valve job) So if anyone has any info about converting a dx to hf through lightening it up, swapping the motor/head and tranny, let me know, because the CRX forums just give me a blank look, and ask me why I don't swap in a V-TEC engine or something like that. Also, this is a little OT but Horn is right about getting more info here than other forums, in general, people are nicer and more helpful and informative here than any other type forum that I hang out at. About the HF transmission - I think they are plenty strong, but it's getting harder to find them because ricers want that tall 5th gear for highway speed. if you were working with a stock HF, I wouldn't have any concern about it. |

I was looking to buy one a year ago .. and I would still buy one today if the deal was right. (I would by almost any good gas sipper if the price is right) Its just very hard to find a good one that's priced right. Take a CRX HF and add in hybrid capabilities and you have a G1 Insight. |

The trany is great because you have that tall 5th....I'd compare it to the metro's trany bevause it's simple. As far as milage, yea 50MPG is just not going to happen with the last gen. The 1.3L from the 80's you'll probably be better off. |
