I can't put this in the tech section yet because I don't know which seal is leaking and I haven't finished the webpage BUT I thought I would post it here so you guys could see what I was working on today:

Very interesting link. Whatever you do, reinstall the crankshaft pulley before you run the engine. The timing belt will walk right off if you don't.

A leak that bad won't be too hard to find. You're on the right path.

I didn't think of that. I pulled her into the garage (after washing) without the pulley on. I probably should not have.

OOOOOOOHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if it gouged a ring around your camshaft. Ouch that would hurt.

It pretty much just popped out into my hand. Not sure why it started sliding forward but it sure did cause a heck of a leak. New seal is in and everything is fine now.

Well, almost. I did see that my Metro is rusting up (in the usually place on the suspension). I'll have to do some grinding to see what is going on. It will be kind of cold for the next week or so but hopefully I can get some warmer weather to work on it in.

Robert, ask yourself, "Why did the seal walk its way off the cam?" Do you have some sort of oil back pressure problem? Is your oil pump working correctly? There had to be a reason the seal came off. Either there was oil pushing it off or the PO didn't install it correctly, or.......the cam has some bad areas on it and is spinning the seal off.

Check your PCV valve and do a compression test. If they are both ok, it was not installed correctly.

I cant see the pictrue very well but it almost appears the seal is in backwards! Spring side inwards, flat side of seal outwards is the correct installation. Picture is not clear but appears the seal is backwards as well as not installed flush.

The camshaft seal is not fully seated.

The camshaft was not backwards (after looking at it again it does kind of look like that). I measured the old seal and the ID was .040" larger than on the new one. I didn't look at the OD but I'm guessing it had shrunk a bit since it was so easy to remove. Not sure why it picked that day to pop out but you know how stuff works out.

I have not done a comp test lately but I am still getting the same MPG that I got two years ago so I am guessing the engine is fine.

I usually smear some rtv around the outter lip of the seal and that will hold it in place as well as help seal from a oil leak.

As in post 16 here,
