Every flat surface that doesn't have the space for shelves gets pegboard.
Good one Tofu! I was just about to mention pegboard. The name of the game is KEEP EVERYTHING OFF THE FLOOR! Posted Image Posted Image
My current garage has 48 square feet of pegboard. I'll probably have twice that much in the new place...

Good google idea. I've been drawing some stuff out on paper but that looks better.
The other nice thing about it is, of course, it makes it easier for you to take pictures of what you've got designed so your friends here can critique it ! :type

We've been talking about it for years and bought a house with an extra lot just for the purpose. I think we are ready to pull the trigger on a 20'x26' metal building. They are about $4500 but that doesn't include any of the extra expenses (electric, concrete pad, etc). I had a truck accident in 2008 and have been fighting to get the other guy's insurance to pay my medical/lost wages. I think they are finally getting ready to write me a check (should be around $12K) and we are going to use that money to put the building up.

Things we are going to do at this time:

20'x26' on concrete with an extra 10' of concrete in front
9'x7' roll up garage door on the front with a walk-in door beside it
single window in the back (probably put a box fan in it for ventilation/breeze)
solar water heater and solar panels for cordless power tool power (expensive but worth it to me as a project)
sink / urinal
small fridge
tons of shop lights on the ceiling
wall to wall shelving/work benches
hard compressed air lines in various places
sawdust vacuum dust collectors
heavy duty welding table in the center
etc

I'll keep my lift in the house garage for the time being. Not really sure if I need it in the workshop but that is being debated.

Anything I'm missing??? Something neat that I need to put in there? Ideas that I probably haven't thought of?
Two months later and plans have changed a bit. I think tomorrow is the day we will contact the builder and say "go for it".

Current plans:

24'x36' stick built shed. Will look like our house (tan hardy plank with dark shingles and the same pitch roof)
16'x7' garage door with walk-in door beside it
two windows on the side (just one side for security)
no sink/urinal - will work on this later

The build is going to cost around $19,500. This will not include insulation, drywall, electrical, etc. It is amazing that we went from $6,500 to $25,000 so quickly!

Building materials are outrageous these days. You cannot even build a doghouse without breaking the bank.

19 grand for a shop? Heck I built an addition onto my house for 11K. It's 20x24 with 2x6 studs, a 4" concrete basement floor, six foot high cinder block walls on the foundation, four double paned windows, 3/4 inch of polystyrene insulation, with siding and a double door which opens out onto a new covered deck. I did all of the work myself. I also did the roofing, electrical, interior sheetrock, mud work, insulation, painting and it turned out rather nice. Maybe I should go into the shop building business.

Come to SC and build it for me. I'll give you $15K right now!

My back is too bad to build it myself...

I would make a shop taller in height so that overheat rack storage can be above the floor, right where you can look up and see it. A small floor space is difficult to work around but overhead storage for tools and materials can help ease clutter. You can never have too many tools but you can be short of storage space. Depending upon local climate you might economize on the amount of enclosed space by including a car port, some covered space without full walls, unheated space etc. A sink with water is a good idea but in small shop a toilet might use too much space.

The budget on this thing has already grown from the original $6,500 to over $25,000 so everything else I want (12' tall walls vs 9' tall, large skylights, etc) has been cut out. We decided that at some point we had to say "no more". I found a really nice two post lift that the guy only wants $800 for but I realize that it will cost me $2,000 in the end for workshop upgrades and I just can't do it. This thing is already as big as my first house was <G>.
