Mrs. Dayle1960 took the Chrysler T&C over to her folks this weekend. She called me up and said the idiot light for the battery came on. Any ideas of where I need to begin? |

FIRST thing to check is that the BELT did not break. most likely same belt runs the water pump :-) "usually" only two culprits. bad battery bad alternator. since it ran I would suggest alternator. could be low power or no power. if low power she might make it home (keep everything off including the heater blower keep it on lowest setting) and hope it makes it. if its low power she might make it home. |

If you turn on the lights, step on the gas and the lights get bright then the alternator is good. Almost every car parts store in the US will check the battery/alt for you. |

Oh, one thing that draws a TON of power is the brake lights. Tell her not to step on the brakes if she doesn't have to. If she drives like my wife that will be impossible <G>. Accelerate like she is running a drag race, get on the next car's bumper (which was 100 yards away when she started), slam on the brakes until the tires chirp, irritate her husband until he is ready to jump out of the car. Continue this over an over until she gets where she wants to go. |

Funny thread ![]() I hope she fixes 'her' car all by herself. Go, Mrs. Dayle ![]() Note: I won't be a passenger for an aggressive driver. My life is worth more than their ego. |

Ugh. Just priced alt for the T&C. Didn't know they were made of gold. Cheapy version is Ultima 90 amp for $130. They go all the way up to a Beck/Arnley for $280 for 130 amps. Ugh. Guess I'll let the wife drive it as far as possible and then she will have to push it home the rest of the way. Anybody got an idea on how much time is involved in replacing the alt on a 98 T&C 3.8L? |

Call the dealership and find the cost of the part and cost of the labor. Divide the labor by $85/hr (is that what they get now?) and multiply by 2 since it will take you twice as long... Try rockauto.com for a new alt... |

Save some money just taking it off and taking it to a armature shop and letting them repair it. |

So Mrs.dayle1960 is in a town about 90 miles away from our house. I'm too cheap to have it towed over here because the van is in a different state and I think the tow charge would be huge. Here is what I'm thinking. I will take my metro's battery over to her. She will drive the van back. If the battery dies between there and here, I will have her swap out batteries and she can continue on her journey back her. What say you guys? Will the battery swap work or is the metro's battery not up the the load needed for a bigger vehicle? |

Oh boy, Dayle1960. The T&C again? Make sure you have the battery load tested somewhere down the line in the near future. No need to fry your new gold plated alternator trying to charge a 'd battery.
