Glenn, the battery is fairly new, six months old with wally world paperwork,. I'm thinking the alt is giving up the ghost. It has 230K on it and is 12 years old. I just was wondering if the metro battery can work on a T&C. Or is that asking for trouble I don't need.

If you cant handle the small situations like the wife being stranded in the town and country, what in the world are you going to do when the global naked chicks arrive?

Now if I were in a global naked situation and my wife was stranded in this situation, I would mount me a alternator on a board with a small briggs and stratton pulling it and wire it up to the battery and drive for days until I could save up enough money for that gold plated job. You have to start thinking out the box.

Fine and dandy, EDG. I would like the global naked chicks to visit while Mrs.dayle is around, NOT 90 MILES AWAY.

Anyway, she had a handy DVOM and read 12.49 volts across the terminals. Hopped in the van and the idiot light comes on. I guess the alt is on the beginning stages of failing. Hope it can get her home or else she will be thumbing a ride with the GNCs.

Know this, if momma is traveling at night and running the lights and the heater and the alternator fails, she wont go far even if she has ten batteries to swap out with.

Dont know abuot the "newer" vehicles but 90 miles seems quite easy to make on one battery charge.

long long ago I was traveling from Dallas to San Diego in a '49 Ford. Just out of Ft. Worth my generator went out. Turned off all electric equipment (damn, no radio) and didnt turn the engine off til I got to El Paso. done an overnight slow charge and the next day drove to San Diego---thats about a 700 mile stint on each battery charge.

I'm sure that 90 miles will be a breeze as long as no electrical equipment is turned on.

Good bye

The reason those alts are so expensive is the one-way clutch built into the pulley. It lets the armature coast down when you shut off the engine. I know about the price, I replaced the alt on one of my daughters 01 Caravan a couple years ago. I have 4 married girls and all but one married guys that know nothing about cars. LOL
:cheers

Grr

yeah with just headlights on you can usually depend on 15-20 miles tops on a good battery. 30-35 on a really nice deep cycle.

in the metro? 60-80 miles? :-) hehe

if its still putting out volts you should be ok to make it home at worst it won't "recharge" but hold "steady" at 12.5v output. this is if your doing daytime.

charge that batt full locally first.

YES your metro battery will run the van just fined

just remember no blower no radio nothing except lights if dark but the lights could sign your death warrant :-( and DO NOT TURN IT OFF for any reason till its home :-)

Well, you're probably enroute to the rescue by now. The Geo Metro battery would fit, assuming it's smaller. The terminals might be on different sides. The only bad deal is if she has side post battery connectors. :banghead

Pretty sure you got the good out of the alternator.

Yeah, I'm going to say it . . . I think Mrs. Dayle1960 may be holding out on you in the technical department. Knowing how to use a DVOM on a battery is pretty high tech stuff. You might want to give her some subtle testing to see what all she knows. Righty tighty, lefty loosey, that kind of thing. See if she knows anything about feeler gauges and micrometers. Get her some designer coveralls and you've got a new shop mate. :thumb

I ain't enroute to anything right now, I'm watching the football game. Mrs.dayle1960 will have to wait until tomorrow morning for the rescue party to arrive. At least she will have two fully charged batteries for a trip back to the house IN THE DAYLIGHT. Should I bring some long underwear for her to use since I won't let her turn on the heater blower motor? Naw, she can learn how to "man up".

Thanks for the help, guys.

We swapped batteries in Miatas every 45 minutes for about 400 miles one trip. Was a pain in the butt but an experience I will never forget.

Neck no, she's watching football right now. I guess she will begin her adventure tomorrow morning. I would be there to assist but I am currently in Louisiana. She will have to put on the big boy pants, i guess.

Have Mrs. Dayle put the meter across the terminals whilst it's running... if it reads 13+ volts, you might not have to go get her. Just a thought.

I called her at aabout 10am. She was half way home. The idiot light was still on. Time will tell.

Well she got home with no excitement. Drats......I mean, great. I guess the idiot light was showing that the alternator is "fixing" to go out in the very near future. She said that nothing happened during the trip that felt like the alternator was dying. I guess I'll look into getting a replacement alternator somewhere around here tomorrow or wednesday. It has 230K on it, so I guess that it is time for a replacement.
