As you know I sold my Geo recently and have been on the hunt for a similar or close mpg buy... This is what I came upon... ![]() Picked her up for $300 with 65k miles, very clean in and out, still have that new car smell... mmmmh nice. It had thrown a con rod and caused two holes in the engine block, yikes! A reported potential 40mpg or more... we will see... Already lined up a long block to replace the original, which has 120k miles that test out ok, but some new parts are likely.. eg: timing belt, water pump, etc. Will post future updates. edit: Geo was sold for $1500. Just out of curiousity for those of us not up on every single car out there, what is it, and what caused those failures on what seems to me to be a fairly low low mileage engine? 65k wouldn't even be broken in on most cars I've owned

Oh my bad, sorry... It's a 94 Toyota Tercel, 1.5SHC, with 12valve single cam. I have concluded that this particular motor have weak internals, mostly connecting rods. They are very narrow at the neck where it meets the piston. I know of at least half a dozen previous Tercel owners who have had similar issues, but at this price it was too hard to past. A replacement motor with stronger internals is the Toyota Paseo; 1.5DHC, twin cam 16valve... Seen here. ![]() Reputed 100hp with average mpg 40+ (which I pick up today) Edited by TheKid, Jan 14 2012, 04:03 PM.

100hp AND 40+ mpg...........the best of both worlds. Hope it works out for you. What's the cost of the long block? |

Yeah... that's what I said when I read about it... Long block was $300, 200psi on all four. Comes with a steering pump, etc but will used the original since it's got lower miles. |

Well, I wish you the best with all that, but from what I'm reading the mileage on the Paseo doesn't read anywhere near 40, even optimistically. 1994 Toyota Paseo 1.5 L, 4 cyl, Manual 5-spd, Regular Gasoline - 24 City / 27 Combined / 31 Highway Or maybe I am misreading what you wrote, and your saying that engine tied to your Tercel's tranny will do 40 mpg but that would also appear optimistic according to the government (you didn't mention 4 or 5 spd, but it is 2 mpg difference either road) : 1994 Toyota Tercel 1.5 L, 4 cyl, Manual 5-spd, Regular Gasoline - 24 City / 27 Combined / 31 Highway Either way, good luck with it, I hope it all works out for you

I would say 40 mpg is possible. my old 87 camry did 32 mpg highway with 4speed auto. much heavier and with a 2.0 litre 16 valve motor. |

That is why I said maybe I'm misreading what he wrote. There is a huge difference between what is possible and what is "reputed to get". Metros are "reputed to get" around 40 mpg. Aspires are "reputed to get" around 40 mpg. It is possible to make a base metro *get* around 50 (or even 60) mpg, not easy, but possible, if you see the distinction. |

Thanks Bogs. ....Just sharing what I found during my research, no doubt there are owners/drivers out there it seem that get above the goverment findings. A few examples... Paseo mpg 1 Paseo mpg 2 Tercel and Paseo mpg I would be pretty ok with getting anything above 32 mpg, because my two other vehicels fall short of that.(24 and 28) and plus I haven't stop looking for a half decent Geo... but Geo's around these parts are pretty worn and shabby due to the snow and all. Anyways... the Tercel is pretty decent, far too clean to have passed up. |

Well, for $300. it is certainly a nice looking car at that price, at least you are going into it with your eyes open, always my first rule. Good luck with your build up of it
