When I bought the car from the P.O. I discovered he had kept a little spiral note book in the glove box. I saw the he recorded the odometer on each tank he bought since the car had 28 miles on it. Now the car has 162,000+ miles. On my windows phone (Like a smart phone) there is an app that calculates your MPG's. So not one to waste time I got right to it. I typed in all 572 tanks into the phone. I have an email option where I can send the logs. They look just like this in the email;
Date, Odometer, Quantity, WasTankFilled, CostPerUnitFuel
9/9/2011 12:03:51 PM, 154383, 3.314, True, 4.049

12/29/2011 4:01:30 PM, 162135, 8, True, 3.19
1/7/2012 11:44:30 PM, 162700, 10, True, 0

OK These are just 22 of the 572 logs. As you can see the first set of numbers is the date (MM/DD/YYYY) then there is the time of day I typed the long into the phone. (Don't care) Then there is the odometer reading with out comas after that is the number of gallons used to fill the tank, followed by the word "True" I guess if the tank was brought to full and lastly the price per gallon. I've only kept track of the price per gallon sometimes in my log.
Here is my question.
Do I really have to go back and do the math on each distance traveled between each tank then retype every one of the 527 entries. To add more insult, Ecomodder likes the date in (YYYY/MM/DD) format. What other options are there?

Why not just start fresh? Don't worry about the other 572 tanks.

Hey Blanco,
I like the newer avitar. I must say the dude next to you with the robbinhood hat wasn't as cool as he though he was.

I've thought of starting fresh, but it would be super cool to see the progression of every tank of gas over the lifetime of the car. Otherwise all the effort of the P.O. was in vain. I just think if I have this oppertunity to graph the lifetime of tanks, I should do it.

You can copy and paste then save the string of numbers into wordpad and save as text. Then in excel you can open it as a csv file using commas as the separating character. From there it is just a simple formula: last time's odo minus this time's odo divided by the number of miles. If you want the excel file, send me your email address to billy508@gmail.com and I'll forward it to you. (This is Rita)

Time and patience and then post the results. It would be neat to see the result of your efforts.

Worked great. Because there are so many entries, I had to devide the log in half. You sent me the first half, Mile 28 to 82,990. If its not too much to ask, could you do it again for the 82,991 to preasent.
You are awesome!!!

I am the one on the left.

This sounds like what I do. I write in a spiral book date, location, how many gallons, total cost. I always fill up unless otherwise noted. I calc mileage every couple of tanks, but every once in a while I will go back and recalc all the ones that hadn't been done.
This lets me know how much gas I use in each vehicle. I am hyperaware of where each gallon is going.

You bet. I've been cranking away at data entry. Pluggin in these 527 tanks of gas is a slow process. With this spiral notebook, the owner wrote down the total cost of fuel but not the price per gallon. I'm toying with the idea of going back and making another collum for the tank cost then I could divide the tank cost with number of gallons to come up with price per gallon. It would be interesting to see the price chage over the years. But I'd bet a chart like that can be found on the net already.
ecomodder keeps track of your average price per mile, so far I'm at $0.08 per mile. I like that feature!
If you are super bored you can see my fuel log if you go to ecomodder and search for "climbinghalfdome". The more tanks I add the smaller the chart gets. I'm about half way done (not quite) so the chart is going to be pretty small when all the tanks are finished.

Ok everyone. (not that many of you were loosing sleep) but here is the results of a month of effort. If you look at my signature, you'll see over 500 tanks of gas that I and the PO filled. Ecomodder can only fit so many tanks on their chart so I had to combine a few tanks together, but all in all its fairly accurate. I wish I had a way to make an even more accurate chart with out modifications to conform to Ecomodders web sie. Well thanks to those who helped.
