I wanted to let everyone know that the rear spindles from our metros are real easy to remove and reuse for trailers and such. I used them with old drums to make a trailer for my ice shack, and to put wheels on my engine drive welder. I have also given a couple sets to friends to use. . Sometimes you can just knock them out with a 3-5 lb hammer. If you mushroom the end a bit just grind enough to the nut back on. I always try to knock them out when I'm at the boneyard, because someone can use them and if I have a handfull of parts they only charge an extra $5 or so. If you incounter one that is super tight, you can score the "hub" with a cutoff wheel, to about a 1/16 in from the spindle and it will knock right out. . These are weldable. 7018 works well. I started out drilling a hole in plate and pressing the spindle in, then welding the back side, but I have found that it is not necessary to get fancy. ' Depending on your application, you may want to outset them an inch or two for clearance. you dont need any of the brake crap, so those old 'junk' drums can serve a second purpose. . |

I have not yet mastered the art of posting pix. I saw the post from Bogs that refered to posting for dummies, and well.... I have just been exposed to computers for a couple months, just learning to type, no idea on lingo and stuff. I got a couple pix to upload to inageshack, but extreme fustration won out, and thats as far as I got. One post said photobucket was easier, so I will try that next. I emailed a couple pix to wanderling to post to "funny signs" for me, check em out. I'll take some and see if someone can help with posting. |

I have not looked. Are the spindles bolted to the strut knuckle with a flat backing to them that would make for easy welding to a pipe for a axle? If they are one piece with the strut knuckle, how would you ever weld it to your axle, a pipe or tube? Some spindles do bolt up and by design are easy to retrofit into a custom made axle. Not sure the metros is though. On older cars that had a front axle, people just used the whole axle and spindles and welded them straight so the spindles would not swivel. Some used the rear end out old differintal style cars but I never really cared for that. If the spindle bolts to the strut knuckle and you can remove it, it would be great and like this. Then you could just slide it up in a pipe and weld it or weld a plate on the end of the pipe and bolt it. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200365118_200365118 Heres a toyota tercel rear axle someone used to make a trailer. They used the whole axle and spindles and all. I used to own a pontiac 6000 that had the same kind of rear axle. I considered using it for a trailer when I junked the car.

It is just a spindle. For the easiest, Chev Cavalier rear hubs bolt on from the factory. 4 bolts/side. Similar to your Toyota, from what I can see. . I took some pix yesterday, got them to Imageshack, and............ . still trying. . I knocked one out yesterday for pix. Edited by sphenicie, Jan 23 2012, 12:10 PM.
