It could be a fuel problem. There are tons of things honestly. Check your compression, and timing. It never hurts to just check those. And you might find something out.

Yes, went to see the guru Larry at Victory Lane Quick Oil Change. We drove it and got in the pit to look underneath.

My guess is your exhaust is falling apart in front of your catalytic convertor or just after.

Bingo.

did you ever solve your belt problem?

Asked Larry about this too. Based on the position of the rubber flakes he thinks it's something with the alternator: either the bearing or brushes causing it to not run smoothly and rub the side of the belt against the wheel.

So what do I win Kevin? A year's supply of gas or more granola bars? Either way, I'll be happy :) Glad you figured it out.

Granola bars at my next visit! They have some new varieties, too. Say I got a piece of pipe, how would you suggest attaching it? Should I keep the cat or get rid of it? Wish I had my mpguino installed so I could see how much fuel economy is lost. Think it's ok to drive on highway?

Awesome! I currently have a straight pipe where my cat used to be as a "quick fix", but it has been there for 2.5 years now. I have an exhaust with cat at my parents when the straight pipe finally falls apart too. I think mine broke right before the cat. There just isn't enough pipe left on the cat, so you need to cut it out & either weld or clamp in a straight or flex pipe until you can get the proper exhaust section including the cat. You can get a flex or straight pipe at AutoZone for pretty cheap. You'll have to get a cutting wheel or hacksaw to cut off the other end of the cat. I wouldn't drive it on the highway until you get something in place of the cat because like you said, you loose some power with an exhaust leak like that.

Wanderling, congrats on the fix! Also thanks for posting the cure to what ailed you. Too many times there will be someone posting a complaint for us members to comment on, only to have our recommendations die without a trace. This leaves us wondering if any of our recommendations were of any use. Thanks for your fix reply.

No problem. One more case for the records. Not fixed yet, my plan is to buy a flex pipe, 2 clamps, and a hacksaw. You can see the weld on the back of the cat. Saw a tutorial on Instructables that recommended exhaust paste... anyone know anything about that? Also, he cleaned out a can of beans and used that. If I can find a can long enough I would use it, but I'll probably have to spring for jubilee clips. Might be able to find a hacksaw to borrow. Glad I have a Metro since I'm cheap.

I have exhaust paste around my welds. It was hard to weld the top portion due to the space between exhaust and car, so I put paste all around it and it dries real hard like cement. It's held up 2.5 years now. Clamps should do the trick though.
