I need a one or two good brand new or hard core close to brand new XFI piston rings (the special one) I want to look into the possibility of getting a custom batch of them made (been poking around and feelers say it might not be all that expensive) but its a non starter if I can't get one for someone to copy it. I have no problem returning it when done (thought it might be a while so make sure its not one "you need" right now ie next 6-8 months or so) if nothing happens in that time will simply give up and return it. |

I guess good used along with original specs might be enough (sorry for not replying sooner work consumed me :-) Once I find someone to make them I will ask how "new" they need to be :-) and of course you can have them back when done if you wish. I can't afford to take my xfi offline for even a day AND mine are well used (I probably have over 200k on it now) how much are the ebay ones I can't find them. |

Ok, you've got my curiosity up Nerys. I'm curious what your overall goal is with this quest? Are you just trying to source some piston rings so you'll have them handy when you go to rebuild your XFI? Or are you just trying to come up with an inexpensive source for the gap-less ring on the XFI piston? Part 2 of my question is about the company Total Seal. Is there some reason why you wouldn't want to just use their rings for the gap-less top ring on an XFI rebuild? Is there a quality issue? Is it just that they are too expensive? http://www.totalseal.com/SearchByBore.aspx So what's the scoop man?

I can't afford the price they ask :-) hoping a group buy might result in cheaper rings maybe even cheap enough for us to buy a few sets each. figure if I need to do a rebuild every 10 years thats a few decades. I should be electric by then :-) plus maybe non xfi users can use then to gain some of the advantages of an xfi even more so than just the other swaps ?? I mean they did it for a reason right? are those $51 (actually not a bad price) rings gapless? most of the "total seal" sets I have seen are HUNDREDS of dollars. |

Hundreds of dollars is insane for piston rings. I suppose if you are spending 50-100k on a race engine then its worth it, but not to us 'average Joes'. Keep me posted. If you get a good deal, I might be interested. I'd me even MORE interested in finding some NOS XFI 2 ring pistons. Rings without the piston are kinda worthless. I have done some brief Web research on having a custom 'XFI' piston made. The cheapest I saw was 500 bucks for a set. That isn't gonna happen for me....ever! Good Luck! Rob |

why not just use 2 of the "slots" in a 3 ring piston? are they truly that different? |

I would love to have a new set of gapless rings. You are more them welcome to use my set for as long as you need. I think they will be very expensive to reproduce but you will just have to see. Also, I just went through this whole ring thing myself a few months ago. Trust me, there are ZERO new gapless XFi rings out there. Beck Arnley had them but they stopped making them several years ago and they have all been bought up. |

If i still had my Tool and Die shop going, (retired now), it would be no problem to make them. It would be really expensive tho. to start with the engineering and development setup would be at least $700 and you would not have a ring yet.----After that the first ring would be about $500 with the prices going down from there. Keep in mind this is just an "off the wall" estimate. I have not been active in the business for over 15 years. |
