I rebuild both my Geo Metros. The first a 91 standard (non-xfi), and the second a 94 XFI.

I did EVERYTHING. Every seal, Transmission, Rings New SST Exh valves... etc.

I also could not find the rings so I bent over grabbed both ancles and spend around $230 for the Total Seal "gapless rings".

The way Total Seal does gapless ring is to basically cut the ring in half horizontally and put 2 rings in the same groove.

The one MAJOR problem with this is that you now have about 30% the spring force of a standard ring, (This includes the OEM factory "gapless rings")

So there lies a major problem. I now have over 5K miles on this rebuild. I have been doing the proper "ring break-in procedure" and the rings are still not broken in. i.e. burning oil and lots of white smoke at idle.

I am now almost certain that these rings will never break in due the to low spring force on the cylinder walls.

Note this is my 2nd rebuild. the first being a 91 metro standard engine (2 compression rings). That first rebuild went perfectly, i.e. it took about 500 to 1000 miles to fully break in the rings. Now it is working perfectly.

Also I am located in No. California where we have strict smog requirements. The first 91 metro passed with flying colors. I did not attempt the 94 xfi for obvious reasons.

I have a question on these original rings. Since they overlap and there is no gap would they reseat with a fresh honejob or would used rings just lose too much tension ?

cant answer your question-dont know. but--it brings forth another
question.------why would you want to hone a cylinder that is
already broke in?
