Well, I just registered the car in my name. now, I have to go get a SMOG inspection. And I'm curious, why is there a difference between the smog inspection and a smog test-only inspection. It seems that test-only is the only logical way to do it. |

Rob your vehicle is obd I, after 1996 vehicles are equip with obd II. the technician can plug into your computer and get a diagnostic. If all components are running correctly and you have no codes, the tech passes you. If your engine throws codes, it fails. OBD I is not as sophisticated and therefore requires an actual count. Part of your inspection is a physical inspection ensuring that your car is in safe operating condition. If you had an undetected exhaust leak it could jeopardize the health of the people riding in your car (CO poisoning). Hope this helps you to understand. cheers

Yes, that makes much more sense. I figured it had something to do with age, and looks like I definitely got my answer. Well, I better pass. After all these silly problems, Im running out of money. |

In Calif, the difference is the test only station CANNOT perform any repairs and CANNOT give any info on what needs to be repaired. The Calif BAR (bureau of automotive repair) has all the info. FWIW, every stinkin one of my vehicles are tagged to go to a test only station for the past 12+ , so the part about it being random on which they send you to is bull. If you live in a 'enhanced' testing area, your car will go on a dyno to drive it under load and they'll test HC, CO and NOx emissions. If not, then they just do an idle and 1500 (?) rpm test for CO and HC. Also in CA they will pressurize the gas tank and watch it to see if it bleeds down. This is a new test that went into effect ~ 3 years ago for those cars that do not do this test automatically (yours doesn't) http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/ftp/pdfdocs/Smog_Check_Program.pdf |

Smog test Only stations will pick you car apart because they are more closely monitored by the state( they are routinely checked by mystery shoppers from the state to catch them doing things wrong) . Where as a Smog Inspection shop you can sometimes get things by ( if you know what I mean) if you know someone there. |

I Hate California With a FIERY PASSION!!! They Want $108.00 For Basic Registration, And I Need A New Catalytic Convertor--An Additional $200.00, And The Smog Test, At $65.00 (At Smog Pros In Reseda.) I Am Required To Spend Around $400.00 Just To Put The Frickin' Sticker On The Back Of The License Plate For This STUPID COMMUNIST STATE!! The California DMV Seems To Think That A Geo Metro Is A LUXURY CAR!! Hence The $108.00 Registration Fee. Then You Gotta Put Up With The Bullshit of the CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL And The LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT!! They Seem To Think That a Geo Metro Is a MAJOR REVENUE PRODUCING TARGET VEHICLE, and They Seem To Think That Every Geo Metro Driver Is A MASS MURDERER, CAREER CRIMINAL, AND HIGHWAY SCOFFLAW!! (Exact Opposite is True!! Sorry CHP, LAPD!!) This Stupid State (And The PEOPLE Here) All Seem To Want To Believe That It's Okay To Harrass, Taunt, Ridicule, And Make Every Geo Metro Owner's Life MISERABLE!! California Law Enforcement Including The DMV Regularly Overcharge Geo Metro and Chevrolet Sprint Owners For Yearly Fees And Insurance, And When Law Enforcement Sees You In Your 3 Cylinder on the Highway or ANYWHERE Here In This State--Makes Absolutely No Difference--Whether You're Driving FAST Or SLOW, They Have A "Valid" Excuse To Pull You Over. California Would Much Rather Pull Over A Geo Metro Doing The Proper Speed Limit And Cite The Driver For Speeding--Rather Than The Jacked Up Pickup Truck or Mustang or Mercedes Doing 50+MPH Going Through A SCHOOL ZONE With Kids About!! And You Wonder Why I'm So Angry And Disgruntled. And You Wonder Why I Can't Afford To Drive My Geo Metro. (I Had No Choice But To Pay The $18.00 PNO Fee.) Yeah, This State Just Plain Doesn't Get It. And, Yeah, This State Just Plain SUCKS BIG TIME!! Bogs? |

So move? Easy solution. I love Florida, no inspections at all. Bring them a title, bill of sale, and I'm on the road(after the $300 or so for registration and tag) |

$30 for the inspection out here, and that's the enhanced testing on a dyno and also the tank pressurization test on m 92'. I too need a catalytic, got it from advance auto shipped for $160 for Calif approved unit. That is irksome - having to get a Calif approved unit. Tags? Don't know what mine is, but yeah it was cheaper when Arnold took over though it was going back up before he left. Me, I don't get bothered by cops at all. Especially now that I do the speed limit ('ish) on the freeway to get better gas mileage. Finally dawned on me how relaxing it was to not have to keep looking in the rear view mirror. All that said, I'd love to retire elsewhere with lower taxes, some property, and cheaper expenses. |

Yeah, Shinrin, That's My Ultimate Fantasy. (That And Seeing and Marrying My Ghanaian Girlfriend, LOL) I Would LOVE TO MOVE!!!! Unfortunately, It COSTS BIG BIG MONEY To Move To Another State. Florida Costs $300.00?? You Can't Be Serious!! I'm Glad However, That No Smog Is Required. I Would Love To Go To Fernandina Beach!! Been There And Love That Beach. Although I Understand That Nassau County And The Nassau County SHERIFF's Department Are Very STRICT. I Don't Know About Panama City, Though. Which Brings Me To Another Question: Are Florida Cops And The FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL--Do THEY Single Out The GEO METRO Driver?? Just Askin'!! HELL YEAH!! I WOULD LOVE TO MOVE OUT OF CALIFORNIA!! If Only I Could Afford It! |

JellyBean, I Am SHOCKED And STUNNED That The CHP Doesn't Harass You. And You And I BOTH Drive Geo Metros. Wow, $30 For Your Smog? I Guess It's Cheaper In Ventura County. (Not Much,LOL) Maybe I Should Concider Getting My Cat From Advanced Auto, I Guess. I Have Just Paid $295.00 Bail To The Ventura Courthouse For My December 18th CHP Ticket. I Can Remember Your Average Geo Metro CHP Speeding Ticket Back In The '90s Being $109.00--Still Bad Even Back Then. The Bail For My ELY NEVADA Speeding Ticket (NEVADA HIGHWAY PATROL) Was $68.00. Wow, Big Difference. And JellyBean, Your Odometer Keeps CLIMBING!! 407.000 Miles?? Jeez! Wow!! I'm Jealous! At This Rate You'll Hit The 1,000,000 Mile Mark In Your Geo Metro By Next Week, LOL. (Mine Is Gonna Be Stuck At The 286.000 Mark for A Long Time. I've Filed A PNO And Cannot Afford To Drive Mine Anymore, At Least For A Very VERY LONG TIME!! (Sorry For The Thread Hijack, Johnny.) |

Going in tomorrow AM to get the Check Engine Light fixed. 96 3 spd has a new cat. convertor but some one said it needs a sensor in order to be Nazi Smog Approved. LittleG needs to get smogged before I can register it. My question is, Should I drive the car & have it heated up to normal or just go to the shop about 5 miles away? (I wrench with a hammer, although I do have the Chilton's for the car) Thanks ahead of time. |
