I am about to put my 18 year old on her 96 Geo Metro (AUTOMATIC) on a road trip From Washington DC to Dallas Texas. Any tips that anyone can give is greatly appreciated!! She will be making stops every 8-9 hours to allow both herself and the car some rest.

Welcome aboard! Obviously a good check up of belts, hoses and tune up items ahead of the trip is in order - I would incorporate the car pilot (does she prefer the title of driver or pilot) into the checkup. Allow plenty of time for the trip and enjoy the ride! Good Luck!

I second belts! Especially the timing belt!

Check the air in the tires and visually inspect them (bubbles? Cracks? Low or uneven tread?) and the valve stems - DON'T FORGET THE SPARE, it needs air too!

Finish up with a check fluids (and thermostat?) and preform a visual undercar inspection for rust especially around key suspension areas. Check wipers.

Thank you both for the response. We are actually headed to the oil change location for an oil change and they will check all belts and fluids for me. Tires have less than 5K on them so they are good, and the spare is full of air. I am just nervous as I pray that the little 3 cylinder is able to make the trip of 1500 miles. Or am I being too paranoid?? The vehicle has 130K miles, but seems to run fine

Thanks again.

Highway miles are easy. These 3cyls are good engines.

That said, check your ignition timing, plugs (highway plugs if you want), cap, rotor, wires.

Not to worry. The trip is WELL within the capabilities of the car.

Too bad she's got a 8 valve 4 cylinder... :P

I've got a 97 auto 4 cylinder with 118k that had been seriously abused by one or more previous owners and I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere. I'd keep the speed 65mph or below, which might be hard to do for an 18 year old.

At those speeds on the highway it gets almost 40mpgs.

Coachaxel, no need to worry about the 3 cyl. Better gas mileage doesn't mean less reliability. She'll be fine. :thumb

Heading west, make sure she has good sunglasses. Or pull over for food at sunset etc.

I am the one on the left.

Should be fine. Do the reccomended tune up/ oil change, and all should be well.
I took mine last summer on a 6000 mile road trip with three other women. we did just fine.

8-9 hours between stops?

By bladder is tuned to 2 hour intervals.

In convoys, we give our drivers a rest every 4 hours at the least. During the break, pop the hood and look at everything. Switch drivers and keep everyone sharp on the road.

I do about 1500 miles in two weeks! Never had any major problems.
