We were all there. I remember thinking the exact same thing. All my friends were older and had nicer, faster cars. Then I turned 18. Got a good job, learned more and got more pay. Now 10 years later I have too much and wish I could just unload a few cars. Dont worry about impressing others. Just think...nice car= jealous ppl that will screw with it. |

Yea usually nice cars and impressing ppl equals you being broke. ask anybody that has put money in a car....99 times out of 100 you will never get the money back. dont worry about impressing people. It isnt worth it.even if you could have the coolest, looking car someone else will come by with a better looking one. do what makes you happy. |

Also alot of the mechanical work is dirt cheap on our cars. most of the projects on here involve time and skill. Not a lot of money. Thats why we own these cars. |

Well I'm old, but I do recall my earlier days somehow. You're young, you have the most desired trait already. The big one from there is patience. Imagine Plan Think it through from start to finish and write it all down Sit on it a few days Re-examine plan Grab parts to modify (instead of modifying what's already part of the car, just in case) Run plans by those who've walked the muddy path Amend plans DO |

If you hate being young, you will hate being middle aged. Then you will hate being old. You will end up being a bitter old man that everyone hates back. dont have a job? sure you do. looking for a job is a job in itself. spend as much time looking as you are doing feeling sorry for yourself and you might just find a job. |

good posting old man. There are trying times for all parts of life. Ask an older person at the store who pushes their cart slowly if they wish their bodies were like when they were young, pretty sure most would. Lack of job can be temporary, but a positive attitude will help you land the job you need/want. Best of luck to you man. |

Hell im only 23 but wish i was still 17.....i wish i wouldnt get a day older. No years are any better than late teens IMO. Less responsibility, no worries, you go to high school which is more of a social hang out. Your friends live close... also when your in high school if your car breaks down....oh well just bum a ride off your friends. If your ride breaks down when you get older its way worse. i have never heard any1 wish they were older....except to be 21. The main thing that you could say sucks being a teen now (compared to the 60s or 70s) is the music, gas prices, ugly cars, cost of college......and alot more. Cheer up skippy. You dont need a nice car to have fun in a car. lol i remember when i was 14 my brother had an 85 1500 chevy state work truck. That thing broke down every week. It only had a carbd 4.3. Hell we would be lucky to spin the tires is the rocks!....then a few gallons of oil spilled on this backroad and we spent a whole day spinning tires in that truck and in a beat up 77 phoenix. Thats how I got my job I have still, with benefits. They even paid for my detox and my pay and held my job for me when my father died. I got this job from my previous job. That involved me driving around with my resumes in a binder and a bag lunch looking for help wanted signs and inquiring. You best investment in a car is labor and eco mods. Thats what i love about my Honda. Since its a hybrid you get more mpg for your buck than a standard car. Those mods pay for themselves if you drive a lot. |

My story is just like a bunch of the ones at the start if this thread. I grew up in a junk yard. Making your car "yours is a unique talent" And one I really like. That can't be taken from you. When I go out cruising on my bike or old Ford truck. People ask who built it for you. I can always say, "I did". I got good at working on cars and bikes, because I was good at breaking them. And being poor trailer trash with no money, meant if I wanted it fix it, I had to do it for myself. I did have one advantage. The guys that I looked up to worked for guys like Carol Shelby, Mario, Dan Gurney... when they were young. So I got to look over the shoulders of great mechanics. I am still learning it too. Find one of the local shops and see if you can't sweep the floors or clean the lube rack or what ever to get your foot in the door. And pay attention and learn. We have quite a few friends over in the Greater Rogue valley area. And all up and down the I5 corridor. Maybe one of them might have some pointers and a little time. Stick around. There is some great advice for young folks in this thread. Don't wish your life away, in the blink of an eye, your gonna wake up and realize that holy shit. So how I got to be old. Where did the time go. And then you will wish to be young again
