When the car hits a bump or making a turn, I can hear this "clunk" noise like metal to metal coming from the left rear of the car. I can replicate the noise even when the it's parked and push down on the rear of the car. So I pulled the car in the garage, removed the left rear wheel and rested the suspension on the floor jack. Stuck my head inside the wheel well while my wife was pushing down on the rear of the car. It was really difficult to pin point exactly where the noise is coming from but its definitely around the the control arm / rear spring area. With the wife pushing down and letting it go, I held on to the rear spring and everytime I hear the noise I can feel the spring vibrate as if the noise is traveling through the spring. The noise happens when the car is on its way up after letting it go. Any ideas what could cause this noise? Should I remove the spring and maybe lube the top and bottom part where it meets the body of the car? Where else could this noise be coming from? Control arms? Is there something binding? I'm all ears guys...........need ideas. Thank you. Edited by shaft, Feb 1 2012, 04:18 PM.

Do you have a sway bar? My daughters car did that, not a Geo, with partially worn sway bar links. Steel can telegraph sound and vibrations, pretty good, making it appear to come from a place that it is not. |

I have no sway bar. Forgot to mention that I had this noise before I did the swap to '95+ rear springs. After the swap, the noise disappeared (about 2 months ago) but now its back. Edited by shaft, Feb 1 2012, 05:14 PM.

sounds like the guts in the struts gave out. Pull off the strut and do a push test if if sinks down and wont come back up your strut is bad and both need replacing. |

I'm hoping Shaft will let me (us) know what the issue or problem ended up being. I have had the exact same issue show up in my '94 XFi over the last few days and was hoping for some direction before I get my hands dirty. Help me out Brother! |
