Eh, Im 50/50 on this. Bigger wires are not neccisarily a power gain. Sure, they have less restriction in them, and are probably better than factory, but if your useing a factory coil, why even bother? But replaceing the factory coil? Thats where the true upgrade lies.

Most factory coils are good for about 1000-3000 volts of discharge. Just enough to jump the gap, end of story. A highpowered coil, however, can jump a bigger gap. Bigger gap=hotter spark and a better start of the combustion process.
Thats the true goal of hot rodders, and even some MPG guys. The reason is lower end torque, and a more compleat combustion. Now while this will add a minimul amount of HP, the benifits is that your burning more fuel than standard, and needing less amount of foot into gas pedal to deliver the same amount of power than previousely needed to achive the same amount of MPH.

Again, the effect is very minimul. But you will notice it in acceleration. Don't bealive me? Just set your gap on the plugs higher. {not too high tho}

Back in the day of points and condenser ignition, 20,000 volts was a good number, nowadays, with electronic ignition, 40,000 volts is common. As I said, simply doesn't make much difference anymore. If the manufacturers could get more power or mpg by putting on a $20 better coil, they would have done it thirty years ago. Oh yeah, they did.

Great info everyone. Thanks for the discussion. For now I'll likely just do new plugs and (good) wires and look to replace the coil later on.

Sounds like a plan. :)

If you ever ponder around in a auto show/ auto swap meet, keep your eye's peeled. There are high preformance coils out there and will usually sell for dirt cheap if you now how to haggle. ;)
