so im working on a 1999 chevy metro 1.0 and it seems to have a strange whine at idle and even when given gas i own a 1992 geo metro and it doesnt make the same sound on the 1999 i began doing a good tune up timing belt, water pump, crank seal,etc... well i ran the motor with no alt water pump hooked up no belt just timing belt and the motor still has that whine i'll make a video of it but is that normal for a newer geo?

Probably got the timing belt tensioner too tight.

I would bet its the timeing belt too. Put mine together and it had a whine too, but I knew what it was and dismissed it imediatly. You need to take a look at the timeing belt to ensure there are no problems with it and to ensure everything is ok, but if no problems are found {belt showing signs of wear, looseness, or fraying} then I would say to leave it alone. A little too tight won't hurt nothing and the belt will wear itself in and the whine will disapear eventually.

An "idle whine" - I thought this was going to be a marital thread.
