I recently put a 1990 engine into my 1992 metro convert, LSI. The wiring harness is slightly different but everything is connected now by swapping parts. It cranks over fine, all the dash lights come on and the fuel pump goes on. The engines are both 1.0s and it is a five speed. Both engines ran prior to pulling them out, (the 92 had a bad piston). The problem is that there is no spark so of course it won't start. The ground wires are all connected. How do I test to see where the problem is. The coil has power to both small terminals. The wire that feeds the distributor doesn't seem to have any juice but I'm not sure how to test it. When I ground one side something comes on (sounds like the fuel pump). One other thing that was different between the two engines is the distributor/vacuum advance setup but it's too hard to describe here. Does anyone have any idea on what is wrong or how to diagnose the problem? |

Did you use the 92 distributor and intake on the 90 engine. If not it won't run . The 90 engine has a vacume distributor and the 92 is electronic . The 92 ecm won't work with the older distributor. Ken......... Edited by 91 ragtop, Feb 13 2012, 07:35 PM.

Ok, thanks but why do I need to change the intake? |

The '90 has no EGR valve, unless it's California emissions, therefore, the intake manifold must be changed, as such. Also, the throttle body for a 1990 is most uniquely designed to only work with '89-91, non-California emissions installations. The throttle body has a Throttle Switch, which has a similar function as the Throttle Position Sensor, but not exactly. Whatever you do, don't randomly adjust the throttle plate stop screw or the Throttle Switch. The TS setup sequence is in the Factory Service Manual. Chilton and Haynes, from what I recall, do not address this system. If you feel the need to adjust the TS, I will more fully explain the procedure. What the Service Manual says, and what it really means are not the same. Is your Geo Metro Canadian or Japanese? Look for a "C" or "J" in the VIN. The emissions sticker under the hood will tell you if you have California emissions. |

Both cars are have a J in the vin and are NOT California emissions. I was wondering if it would work and be easier if I swapped out the computer instead? |

just use the engine from the 1992 in the 1990, just use all the bolt ons from the 1990 instead of the 1992. and it should work just fine. when i say bolt ons i mean everything you bolt onto the engine with teh cylinder head. distributor, intake minifold exaust manifold. and all the stuff that bolts onto each of those from the year car your wanting to install them in.
