Snagged a Geo Metro!

I've been looking to buy a Geo Metro for about 6 months. I used to own one back in the 1990s and it was a great car. I have a job with a LOT of driving and the gas costs were killing me. I was getting ~24/25 MPG in a diesel Mercedes 300D - and diesel is ~30ยข a gallon more than unleaded. On Sunday I finally found the right Metro, and was first to see it and snag it up before someone else bought it (which is what happened with the 3 prior cars I found that looked like good prospects). I've driven it about 500 miles and I'm getting ~42 mpg now. (I hope to get it tuned for better mileage and see if I can get closer to 50 like I did with the car I drove in the 90s.)

The car is a 1997 Geo Metro hatchback, red, 5 speed. 141k on the odometer. I drive ~1k per week in my job, so it's going to go up fast.

I have to remember to push on the clutch when I come to a stop after a long stretch on the freeway. It's been a long time since I drove a stick!

The car is in great condition, needs only a few small repairs:

1) The tip of the washer wand is missing, instead of the smooth black plastic part that goes on the end of the wand I see the white plastic inner workings.
2) I need to get a cover for the area behind the rear seats, to keep items out of view thru the hatchback window.

I'd love a pointer for where to buy these parts.

You will never find a rear shelf. Trust me. It's best to fab something yourself. If you do stumble upon one be prepared to pay out the nose. They are VERY rare and as such pricey.

Junk yards are always the best way to locate parts for the metros.

Welcome to GMF. Btw, do a compression check on your engine. Most metros engines last 135K before they need new valves.

Here is a "how to" make a cargo cover out of fiberglass. If you arent "fiberglass smart" maybe you could make it out of plywood.---------

otherwise both items will have to be obtained from a junkyard

I never thought I'd ever find a rear shelf, but GMF member Ryan & I both found one within a week apart. He bought his for $2 & I bought mine for $5.

Welcome here, and I agree with Mjs, while finding a shelf may be difficult, don't let it stop you from looking, you might find one.

I also wouldn't let it stop me from making my own though, there is nothing magical about the rear shelf in and of itself, you might like your own shelf better :thumb

Your new car is larger and heavier than your old Metro, so it's going to deliver about 5 less mpg at all times. That doesn't mean that you can't get it up to 50 mpg, it's just that the older ones do it stock.

Welcome jcdill! :coffee

Yep, all of the above. :)

One site that might help is http://www.geopartsused.com/home_index.html and they are just 6 miles from beautiful downtown Burbank. ;)
