I finally joined! Some of you might recognize me from TeamSwift or EcoModder. I'm very slowly working on two 1994 Metros. The MPH Metro will have a 1989 Swift GTi DOHC and the MPG Metro is getting a 1992 XFi engine. I haven't done much with either one lately, other projects keep getting in the way.

If I didn't have to deal with "life" & Murphy's law all the time, I could get a lot more done. Welcome! Post pics & keep us updated on your projects.

Welcome to your new forum, Gasoline Fumes! :coffee

From 2+ years ago... I'm the same Bad Bent you would read about on TS. :-/

Yep, everyone needs two Metro for precisely what you are doing. My wife has Goodie Two Shoes with the 'econo' cam and I have The Filthy Beast that has the street/race cam. :D

Enjoy the forum and have fun... :banana

I maintain 2 metros but am pretty sure I don't actually have any (wife and daughter claim the Vert for 8 months of the year and the hatchback for the other 4 months). Welcome aboard!

I have plenty of pics! I'll try to condense nine years of playing with Metros/Swifts into one post! I'll start with the blue MPH Metro, since I got it first, way back in 2003. It was originally an automatic, but I swapped it over to manual. Had a burned valve when I got it. It will be getting a GTi engine, possibly turbocharged too. Also getting a 4.39 trans, GTi bumpers and GTi front seats. And various other things like weight reduction and suspension mods. It's been off the road for half its life, so the rust isn't too bad for a NY car. And it was free!

Currently is sitting like this.

I had originally swapped out the 3-cyl for a '92 8-valve Swift engine and 3.52 manual trans. Never ran right, so I pulled it out when I got a GTi parts car.

The black MPG Metro is a Florida car, so it doesn't have the NY rust I'm used to. It has working A/C! It will get some aero mods, 3.52 trans, GTi dash, Swift sedan seats, some suspension mods and some weight reduction. Yeah, I like light cars that handle good. :D

This is how it looked when I bought it for $150. Flat black with a Pontiac Grand Am wing bolted to the hatch. Looked like isht. It was originally maroon.

I had never painted a car before and had no idea what I was doing. How hard can it be? I had read about Canadians painting cars with Tremclad and rollers. I can't get Tremclad here and I'm not Canadian, but I tried it with Rustoleum anyway. Total waste of time and paint. Then I sanded down all the runs/lines and sprayed it with a cheap spray gun. I got a lot of "orange peel" and need to do a little more buffing, but it's not too bad. Here are some paint pics:

I painted under the hood while the engine is out.

I found a good hood after I painted the car!

The original engine ran, but smoked really bad. I was going to rebuild it, then I found an XFi engine for $100. Not knowing the condition of the XFi engine, I tore it down. I was happy to find out it really was a XFi engine with two-ring pistons and the XFi camshaft. I am going to reuse the "gapless" compression rings, since I can't find a source for new ones. It's getting new NPR oil rings. I cleaned up the ports a little with a die grinder for increased flow. No change in size or shape.

I added Singh grooves, since I hear a lot of positive things about them:

I need to get the engine back together. Still have to hone the cylinders and get the head shaved down for higher compression.

I also have a bunch of parts cars stacked to the ceilings with spares....

And I currently drive a 1991 Honda Civic Wagon that averages (in Summer) 50 MPG with a lot of hypermiling.

Never seen anyone spend time swapping in the 8 valve. It looks cool in there.

I needed an engine and just happened to find the '92 Swift. I parked them side-by-side and moved all the 8-valve and manual trans stuff over. I was adding 15 HP and two more gears. Part of why it looks cool is I tossed the steel valve cover in favor of the 95-97 aluminum valve cover. The DOHC will look even cooler in there! :D
