installing new head; cleaning/locktite

Putting new head on my 92 1.0 liter. Lots of carbon on number one piston. What is the best way to clean it off? Also should I use locktite on head bolts? If so which kind? Thanks.

Never use loctite on headbolts. I just lightly oil the threads and washer.

Walmart carries gallon sized can of carburetor cleaner. Has a basket for dipping small parts but you can get your pistons and rods in there. A good 24hr soak and it will come off with a scrub brush. Just don't use a steel brush. I like the small brass ones for getting in the ring grooves. Cost about 20 bucks

My last head cleaning I used an electric drill with a wire brush. Used brake cleaner and air compressor air to finish cleaning it good. Time before that I soaked the pistons in gasket remover - worked good.

Almost had a heart attack when OP mentioned the words locktite and head bolts in the same sentence. I'm ok now!

I used a little anti-seize on the threads and a "little" under the bolt head for an accurate torque and easier to get off next time.

Didn't want to pull piston. Could I clean it in the block?

From experience I would drop the pan and pull the pistons and hone and rering. At the least. I've got 5 metros. Three are daily drivers. When I bought them I started off doing the bandaid fixes. Replacing burnt valves. Cam seals. Waterpump. Etc. but I end up working on one of them almost every weekend. So I did my first complete rebuild 6 months back. Have not had an issue with that one since. Had a spare motor I was going to rebuild as a drop in replacement. But one of the others broke a valve and now I have 2 engines to rebuild.
