the alternator belt....really I haven't had any issues with mine. it has 204k. I've had it for a year. Mine usually lets me know like when the fuel pump was going it. It would sputter a few times, but never broke down. Then I replaced it. Really these engines are built solid. Always have a few tools in your car. When you shift down into second and first, make sure you are going slow. Dont try to use 2nd and 1st gear to slow you down. the synchros are known to give a few problems, but the trans wont go out. Probably the worst thing that would happen is you have to be completely stopped to go into 1st. If your car is having this problem, drain the tranny fluid and put 2 - 2.5 quarts of pennzoil synchromesh in. Its around $8 a quart. Yea you have a relatively low mileage metro. I wouldn't worry about anything. Check your frame horns for rust. I doubt there is any, but I have there are several times you will see a rust free body, but rust on the frame horn. I don't know what to tell you to have as extra parts. These cars are simple, even if anything breaks it will be something small. It will be easy and cheap to replace. You won't find a cheaper or easier car to work on. If you ever need tires junkyards are great for tires. I always get mine at PnP. |

o yea my alternator belt looks like shit since I bought it....25k ago, and it hasn't broke yet. I should probably replace it before it breaks, but that would make too much sense. lol |

belts a good idea, all my cars are manual and I would never use the tranny to slow down on any of them brakes are alot cheaper than transmission work! These cars do seem a simple and in my book that is awesome. I threw some tools in the back and some jumper cables so I guess Im good to go, What kind of oil do you guys prefer and do you use any Lucus oil Stabilizer? I'm a EX-ford v8 guy and have traditionaly used royal purple in my previous cars Looks like the syncromesh is the preferred tranny fluid thanks for the tip |

Hell no, lol......just some Grade A Supertech 5w-30. If you search on here about oil you will see a big debate and you will come across AE-2234ABEC oil or something. Really just maintain the car as you think you should. It will be fine. I know quite a few of us run seafoam in the cars because they build up carbon bad. Also, take of the EGR valve and clean it out. also the ports on the intake should be cleaned out too......there are many topics on here that refers to the cleaning. |

Agreed on the oil and I have switched to Mobile 1. I will occasionally top off with Lucas Oil Stabilizer but have not lost as much oil since switching to Mobile 1. Before changing oil add 5 oz of Seafoam to the oil and drive it 300-500 miles (a tank). I carry the alternator belt and a timing belt. For tools I have a small jack, and in my tool bag at least a set of 10-17mm sockets. If you loose the timing belt it will take removing the RF wheel, loosen the Alt. (12mm), water pump pulley (11mm?), crank shaft pulley (11?) and using a 17mm socket to secure the crank shaft from turning. More 10mm and 12 mm sockets and you should be fine.
