its going to be a while before i can start rebuilding my old engine so i was wondering what i should do with everything until i'm ready. it might take a month or two. i was planning on taking everything apart and storing the stuff that would rust like the cam and crank and stuff while i slowly clean the other things. should i throw them in a tub of used oil or is that a bad idea?

There is a product, 'fogging oil', generally for cylinder wall protection during storage of an assembled engine. One spray can would be more than enough for a 3 or 4 cyl. then bag parts up, much less mess, spray is easy to get good coverage, too.

I say some old oil in a high quality trash bag with the cam or crank inside and wrapped tight. Shouldn't run into any rust this way. Just use enough oil to lightly coat the entire crank\cam

Totally submerged, in oil, would be the best bet, IMO. :thumb

Second would be oiling & bagging. The fogging oil is a good idea. :hmm Plus it sticks good. ^o) The spray can makes it easy to apply. :cheers

Sir Metrologist

I picked up a spare foodsaver vacuum sealer and a ton of bags at a yard sale for CHEAP! :banana

Here is how I am storing my XFI cam until I get around to installing it:

I coated the cam in new oil and tossed a cap full of oil in the bag before I vacuum sealed it. It will be perfect when ever I get around to installing it. :thumb

I sprayed mine with WD-40 and let it sit in my room, but I figure not all of you are as cool as me.

Oil and bag. Best way to store cam and crank Is in the head and block. If not stand them on end.

I like it, just make sure you don't loose track of it or accidentally have the wife prepare it in a side dish :lol

Hosed my spare XFi cams down with PB Blaster and wrapped them tight in Walmart bags. Seems to work fine.
