Hey Guys, I recently inherited a 1996 metro from my dad that needs a new transmisssion. I am super excited about this car and was hoping to get a conversation going about ways to maximize mpg. Since I am going to replace/rebuild the tranny anyway I was considering playing with the gears to increase efficiency. This car isn't my daily driver, (yet!) so having it in pieces for a while isn't a problem. Anyone who has advice on how to increase mpg I'd love to hear from you. I'll probably have some questions about the tranny swap/rebuild in the near future too. I'm really looking at experimenting with this car and seeing just how high I can get the mpg. There's a lot of rumors out there and I'm not really interested in coasting or turning off my alternator for periods of time like I've read about. Driving techniques are one thing, I want to improve aerodynamics and drivetrain/fuel combustion efficiency. |

Welcome aboard! You can figure out transmission ratios using this method: http://geometroforum.com/topic/4187023/1/ If you have a 3 cylinder engine most members would steer you away from the transmission that would bring the absolute best highway mileage (3.52) http://geometroforum.com/topic/4701931/1/ unless you live in a predominantly flat area and are truly committed to the highest possible mileage attainable as you will be giving up acceleration and the ability to pull hills. Next notch up 3.79 seems to be a popular choice and is probably what I will do next. You might also consider a 3Tech economy cam (mimicks the Xfi cam), but the biggest and most effective fuel mileage gain is to adjust the nut behind the wheel. Good Luck! You can find an XFi 3.79 tranny or '95+ 1.3 3.79 tranny using www.car-part.com. I'd also recommend upgrading the flywheel to a 1.3 flywheel. You can find them for as little as $20 using the same website. The 3.79 will give you the best highway fuel econemy for the 1.0 engine & better acceleration using the 1.3 flywheel/clutch which will allow you to get up to cruising speed a little quicker & assist in city driving. The XFi/Delta/3tech camshaft will also assist in city driving. |

As a side note to the above comments on the transmissions, decide which tire size diameter you will be running *before* deciding which transmission final drive you will be running, as the tire diameter will be the ultimate deciding factor of your final ratio.
