(I updated this under the wrong thread so I'm putting it here as well)

Update:

Well we are finally getting to redo the head gasket. We took the head to a head rebuilding guy in town and he rebuilt it for 120. It looks great. Pics attached. The head is in, but we forgot to rent a torque wrench and have to wait a day. Already got the intake and exhaust all connected.

And its all back together and running again. Yay to a successful headgasket replacement. I would have liked to have redone the lower end, or at least redone his rings, but it just wasnt in his budget :(

just replaced the coolant hoses, only lower one left to replace. replaced all vacuum hoses. replaced radiator cap. next will be the water pump and thermostat. then the radiator if that doesnt work to fix overheating.

If you are replacing the lower one that might be a good time to check the radiator for flow. We have had a few pumps go bad but more problems with the small channels in the radiator getting clogged IIRC, and probably even more thermostat related problems.

we replaced the thermo. during rebuild

I didnt think to make sure the radiator wasnt clogged. I"m going to advice him to run some cleaner though the system once the water pump is changed. He just drives a little ways to get to work so if he keeps his water up the overheating shouldnt be a problem while he gets money for the pump.
