Last night I was driving back home on the a 4 lane highway when my front left tire blows out......So I pull over to put the spare on. The shoulder has plenty of space to do the tire and I had about 4 feet between me (as I was changing the tire) and the white line on the road. I turned on my hazards, dome light and had my hatch lifted so people could see. Well I always thought it was common courtesy to move to the far lane if you can. If not then slow down some. You don't have to go slow, but there were people that would be in the near lane and they were flying. I understand sometimes you just cant slow down or switch lanes, but the highway wasn't busy. It just seemed like people didn't care. I had to change my tire, while I was looking at the traffic. There wasn't much and luckily nothing happened, but some people..... Doesn't that seem like a common courtesy? What are some common courtesies you follow or don't follow while on the road? Is it different in other parts of the country? |

I believe it's absolutely different in different parts of the country. My hypothesis is that if you grew up in a less populated area you learned to be dependable for others and to accept help from time to time. If you grew up in a heavily populated area you learned to suspect people and avoid being taken advantage of, with the attitude that someone else will take care of it... |

i used to drive a wrecker and when i was on the side of the road hooking up a car i would have the blinky lights on the tow truck it seemed like the lights would attract people to fly by me as close as they could. like moths to a flame. i dont know whats wrong with people. our tow trucks would get sideswiped way too often. |

I don't know about the common courtesy thing ( I usually move over if I can) but never ever change your tire with your back to traffic. Not all drivers are as smart as we are.

I don't pull over and help anyone. Too many weirdos out there. I usually move over a lane if someone is broken down, but, I'm only going about 55 to begin with. |

watching people on TV who are running from the cops drive for miles on a flat tire I am convinced that if I have a flat I can drive to a place way off of the highway to change the tire. ruin a tire?=$50? ruin a rim?=another $50 get hit by a stupid driver?=priceless |

I will help people depending on the situation. in my small home town i will help. Its just situational. I heard on the radio where this older couple stopped to help these 2 young girls change their tire. The old couple then left before the girls. The girls came around a turn and saw the car pulled over and the wife going crazy. Come to find out the husband was having a heart attack. Sucks!....but the girls he helped were RNs and helped him and he lived! no idea of its true but a good story. Or you can be likee and be nice and give a girl a ride across town. Mid trip she tells me she is a "call girl". I couldnt drop her off soon enough and get the hell out of that situation. She gave me both her numbers trying to get business....lesson learned. Lol |

Yes, a person should slow down or move to the next lane. In fact I do believe it is a Federal law that when a Police officer or State Trooper has the emergency lights on you MUST slow down or move to the next lane. Drivers are drawn to the flashing lights, they get fixated on them and BAM! they hit the person changing the tire or tow truck driver or the Officer writing a ticket or smash into the parked vehicles. It gets me when I go to take a right into the slow lane of the two lanes with all but one car coming. They are in the lane I want and are 3 busses out and will not switch lanes just so I have to wait and wait and well you get the idea. And about the changing the tire out there on the side of the road.. It just seems like every man for himself. Like were in the Titanic and it's going down. Sometimes I will drive around town with a gallon o gas in the hatch for the ones that didn't make it. In the last 1+1/2 years it has helped at least 4-5 people. In the heat of the summer 108+ in TX those folks are very thankfull.. 8^) |

In my career, I often do road service on the side of the interstate. People do not move over and I have almost been killed by a few close calls on the road. |

A common courtesy in my area is to always ask for your finger to be pulled before farting. I think people respect that. |
