I know the recommended rim width is 5.0-6.0, however I found (8) Yokohama A008 Ultra High Performance tires that I can get for "I'll take just about anything." Maybe a set of 8 for $100 or even $200???? The stock rims are 4.5" right? Opinions? Thanks Tom |

<40 dollar/tire mounted and balanced, can't really go wrong... How old are they? You might not want them if they've been sitting for a very long time. Edited by Coche Blanco, Mar 5 2012, 03:24 PM.

That is irrellivent. Ive run tires from 01, with no issues. Ive run rotted out tires taht actually started losing tread patches on a 300 mile round trip, granted i was missing a 2 inch section of tread, but the tire never gave out, its still holding air to this day on the parts car |

Yokohama A008 10" Wow, these tires are Beasts. They're almost like slicks on the outer tread (they call it a "continuous outer rib") - the part that rolls under during cornering. If you want a 12 that will not go in the snow or probably rain for that matter, these are the tires! Sidewalls are really stiff and it looks like they will be pretty happy on a 4.5" wide rim - they really suck in when you get to the bead. EDIT Good grief, tirerack still sells ONLY the 10 for the Minis and they are $106 each. $424 a set of 4. OUCH. It appears these tires are super sticky soft compound, one tire dealer gives it a 0/10 for tread wear! Almost everyone says it is a great track tire. I give up, I was trying to find some of the ratings for dry, wet, snow, ice, treadwear, etc. and I can't find anything on the A008. TireRack offers it but there is only limited information available. A couple internet search phrases were "should not be driven in near freezing temperatures." I'm not going to use them until I wear out my current tires, however, I may chicken out and flip 1 or both sets for more sensible tires - but I have to realize that anything with good handling and I'll be spending way, way more than what I got these for. But then on snow, they will be useless. Edited by Cardinal Grammeter, Mar 5 2012, 05:52 PM.

Those were the baddest tires available 10 years ago, they don't make them anymore. They'll probably work just fine on your wheels, won't look right, and won't perform at their max, but these tires at their max could roll you car with little effort. Treadwear rating is 160. Don't worry about the cold weather rating, put them on now, they won't last until it gets cold again. Edited by Woodie, Mar 6 2012, 06:43 AM.

Where are you seeing that they make these in a 12'' ? All I'm seeing is that the A008 is 10'' and specific to just a few cars. No wonder he wants to sell them so cheap. Ken..... |

No haven't seen them current in anything other than the 10" Mini size. I have to laugh, these tires have definitely been sitting around the warehouse for years - nice layer of vintage brown dust on them - but that is a good thing. If they are partially "petrified," the rubber will be nice and hard and will last a long time (haha). They really look like beasts and make Michelin Pilot Sports look boring. Tom PS's: I put a set of Uniroyal radials on my Studebaker in 1974. They were G78-14's (maybe H's...) and I Armor All'd them a number of times - original formula - not the "soaked in brake fluid" wet look that jamokes love (those people drive me nuts!) And they are still on the car at about 1/2 tread and NO CRACKS. But now they more closely resemble wood rather than rubber. (I swear, when I lay tire, they even sound like scraping wood.) Actually, if you burn some rubber off of petrified tires, you can get to softer strata! Really need to get the bars on car before I put these on. Also have to deal with the lugs the inspection station torqued to 75 ft-lbs. Also, need to find thread, someone welding frame horns put little diagonal braces for more transverse stiffness. Need to see if those braces could have been run to the other frame rail. If possible, it would be a perfect "X" stiffener for the horns. |

HaHa, maybe I need to find some wide 12's????? (Oh that is so sick.) EDIT Yeah, its way sick. Do a search on eBay for 12x6 wheels and 95% are ATV's. EDIT2: Woodie! Roll? How about a lower "horn" hernia(!) Edited by Cardinal Grammeter, Mar 6 2012, 03:01 PM.

Oh No. I just discovered the stock rims are not 12x4.5 but only 12x4 (I have no idea where I got the idea they were 4.5 wide.) With the recommended rim width of 5-6, these A008's can't be happy at 4. They may be decent but it will bug me what they would be like with the right rims. |

We used to use these on the autox cars in the late 80's early 90's. They were also legal in Vintage racing on the Mini. They are DOT race tires. Not designed for any regular mileage. All the autox guys kept them on extra rims and changed them at the event because the life expectancy was so short. No matter what is said about old tires check the production date. They will wear out VERY fast no matter how old they are and if they are more than about 7-8 yrs old there is a real and distinct possibility that the entire sidewall of the tire will blow out with very little warning at highway speed. Ask me how I know. Unless you are interested in importing tires from England, there are none that I know of in the 12" size, at least in Canada, that are anywhere decent for sporting type driving. When you do find 12"ers they are bargain basement specials that try to roll off the rims under any cornering load. Edited by clarkdw, Mar 8 2012, 12:25 AM.
