I've posted on this before, but no response. This one's really biting at me. I have a nasty gas smell when idling and after engine shut-down. There is no external leak. I have replaced: Fuel hoses in the engine compartment Fuel Pressure Regulator Fuel Injector. (both the new one and old one seeped with pressure applied and engine off) Fuel tank cap All vacuum lines (verified no leaks from vacuum components) Verified the smell is not coming from the evap canister. Yes the injector seeps, but I wouldn't figure this would cause the smell with the engine running at idle. I have scoured the threads with no luck. Anyone see this in the past? Anyone else's injector seep with the engine shut down? I'm done with this one!The only thing I have changed since the smell came about was the octane grade. I went from 92 to 87. |

I've had a smilar problem and like you I wouldn't suspect the injector while the car was running unless it was really bad. Once shut off if the injector is seeping that certainly could be your source. My first suggestion would be to double check that your gas cap is on both straight and tight, that it is making a seal and releases pressure when you open it. In my case I got the cap slightly askew and had a gas smell that was driving me crazy until I reseated the cap and it went away. Or it could be the seal on your cap has aged out and you need a new gas cap. Next would be to check the FSM (Factory Service Manual) and see what it suggests. Finally I would be suspicious of the ervap cannister and it's associated tubing. The only way I can think of testing it would be to essential run a leak down test on it - plug the end at the fuel tank, use a hand vac pump and then watch it to see if it leaks back up to atmosphere. Try the easy stuff first. Good Luck! Edited by idmetro, Mar 16 2012, 04:48 AM.

I have a new gas cap and there is the typical considerable hiss when it is opened, so the cap is good and tight. The smell inside the car is coming from the air vents since the gas vapor is exiting the top of the hood. When I open the hood and get my sniffer into the area, I smell the gas the most between the MAP sensor and the air cleaner. There is no smell around the evap canister, nor is there any smell forward of the air cleaner. The smell was first noted when I left a store at the mall and has been present ever since. If only my nose was big enough to fit down closer to some of the components. Stink! Edited by iBLKBRY, Mar 16 2012, 07:22 AM.

Hi iBLKBRY- Maybe the fuel smell is originating under the vehicle and the fumes come up the firewall into the engine compartment? Edward |

Until you find the problem...is your air lever on recirculate or vent? Move lever to recirculate. |

Have you checked the fuel line from the gas tank to the engine bay ? Now would be a good time to replace the fuel filter. Edited by dayle1960, Mar 16 2012, 08:06 AM.

Put a pressure gauge in your fuel line. shut down and see if the pressure leaks down. |

I'm sure the pressure bleeds down since the injector seeps. I'm waiting for another replacement since the one from Rockauto also leaked. I verified the odor is not coming from anywhere aft or from the bottom of the engine compartment for that matter. Today I removed the fuel tank vent hose from the canister check (orange color) valve. There was plenty of fuel venting and the odor was not quite the same as what I'm smelling in the back of the engine compartment. My smell seems to be more 'heated' and with a tad of oil. Similar to the smell of a two stroke outboard engine when its not running. I suppose that at idle, the vapor of the fuel that puddles on the throttle plate could be enough to overcome the mighty CFM draw by the engine. I read up on the evap system today and though theoretically suspect, I just do not get any vapor smell around any of the components. The vapor seems isolated to just aft of the air cleaner and toward the MAP sensor. One question. I have had difficulty finding a new fuel return hose in the 1/4" inside diameter with the same HP rating as the 5/16" pressure hose. All NAPA and O'Rielly's sells in the 1/4" is fuel vapor hose. Anyone have any other leads on this size hose? |

I know that my AutoZone carries 1/4" fuel injection rated hose. I think Advance Auto does too but I buy from AutoZone since their hose is Goodyear, which seems to be much higher quality and stays soft compared to the stuff at Advance which seems to turn hard much quicker. Is the fuel vapor hose they sell unbraided like vacuum hose? The return line isn't really pressurized, so using something not rated for high pressure should be fine. But I'd use braided hose at the least. |

I wonder if the injector is leaking/dribbling due to a build up of crud that could be cleaned up? I am currently gathering part to take a stab at cleaning the one in my 92 as I don't think its atomizing as well as it should be. Somewhere on the forum there is a thread to EGDs injector cleaning setup (can't find it at the moment). |

Is there any chance that your heater core is leaking coolant and maybe you're mistaking the odor for gas? Regarding the Evap canister mentioned above, I agree. Check the canister for cracks. On my 96 model, the canister just hangs on the firewall. The canister should just lift off the firewall. |

Most canisters I have seen vent out the bottom to the driver's side wheel well and that could be an issue. You have a vacuum hose diagram on your hood and everything is hooked up. photobucket.com/Pics/96GeoSticker I know this sounds redundant but there are only a limited number of places it can leak from, granted it's fuel as 96Geoman suggests. Fuel from the tank to the TB and back with a canister evaporating fumes. The gas cap seals it and there is an overflow tube. 8. 1995-1997 M,Fuel Tank - SU03076 So you have checked the obvious and now it might be time to check what "it can't possibly be." FYI, I once had the rubber hose between the fill tube and tank kink on me while on a long vacation. Couldn't fill the tank. Just saying that strange things happen.

No crud externally. I tried soaking in naptha, but it still seeps. The remanufactured one I purchased from Rockauto actually seeped a little more. I'm awaiting another replacement. |
