hello everyone,
As you can tell i have just joined today and i have been reading every single forum post i can find about rebuilding engines, trannys, cleaning head lights, etc. I am in love with this forum there are so many topics full of information and people on here look very very helpful. So here's my situation: I currently attend college and i am tight on cash i have been doing a lot of research on Geo Metros and the mpg is amazing! sure i'm not going to win a speed race, but i really don;t care. i'd rather save now and play later you know?, so here's the situation: i have finally found a 1991 geo metro lsi Convertable 3 cyl 5 speed and only has 85,000 miles on it, it looks to be in good condition from what i see, it does need a new topper from years of decay from the sun which i have read is quite common which i don;t mind fixing i probably wont be using it much anyway it does not have A/C, the guy is asking 2300$ for it what do you feel is a respectable price for it?, i'm on a tight buget and cam really barely afford 2000$ any thing you guys think i should look for specifically and anything i should do/say to try to lower the price a bit? or if that's a good price i'll buy it at that, any help is greatly appreciated! thank you in advance!,

Aaron.
P.S.... sorry for bad grammar, punctuation etc. i'm not that great at it, never have been don't hate me just yet :) i'm new.

read this:

the price is a personal desire thingy. I would offer him your two grand and ask him to provied the materials to put a new top on

BTW: Your choice of a '91 'Vert is a VERY good choice ^o)

Can't speak for old man but here are my reasons why I believe a convertible Metro is a good choice:
- Reasonably affordable (I know this is a relative term)
- Nothin quite like a drop-top for miles and miles of smiles
- Can return terrific fuel mileage (In good repair and driven modestly a 3/5 can consistently bump 50mpg)
- When properly maintained they run and run and run
- Even when improperly maintained they are pretty tough
- Drives like a go kart (feels like you are travelling faster than you actually are - helps reduce tickets...)
- Easy to work on 98%+ of all jobs on them can be done with hand tools
- Geometroforum - Full of helpful folks who are willing to help you track down and slay your individual Metro gremlins

In answer to your question about what happened to them - Metros ceased production in 2001

i have another question, the person says that the brakes are new, how would i change the brakes in the future though? seeing as it is a 1991 car i've clicked on the forum link to change the brakes, but sadly there are no pictures. also what would you pay for the car if it is in good shape? also another question, the guy says that it has 85K miles but i just noticed it can only go up to 99999 before it resets to zero right? is there anyway i can see how many miles is actually on the car? or just hope for a good car?,
another edit -.- ( i know that this part is only for introductions, but i have no idea where to post the questions related to this just trying to find things to look for before i buy the car sorry in advance if i have made a mistake.)
Aaron

He said that because he owns a 91 vert.
You could purchase a Carfax report that will show the number of owners, mileage, possible accidents, where the car lived, etc.

Read the Buyer's Guide. If you know a mechanic who can perform a simple compression test, take him (and the tester/tools) with you and test compression if allowed. If the numbers are above 156 across the board, it does not need a rebuild. If there is no rust, jump on it!

so what price do you guys think i should pay? and anyone think they can explain how to drive manual :) never learned. i get the concept of you need to have the clutch pushed down to start the car and make sure it's in neutral, then slowly transfer to the gas and even em out while shifting, just don;t really understand going up a hill down a hill when i'm in traffic etc. anyone think they could help with that? :)

Here is a list of our available Metro mechanics. Go through it and maybe you will find someone close to your home.

Here, if you scroll down to Florida, you will find a list of all our member in the state of Florida. Several are from Miami. You might want to PM all of them and ask for assistance. Since they are in your area maybe you could go to them and ask questions.

As Johnny mentions not impossible - does take focus and practice. I have gotten to the point where I take a newbie to a wide open parking lot and challenge them to get the car moving using only the clutch with no throttle. Once you can do that you will have learned how to engage the clutch smoothly and the rest of it will be cake. Can be a rathe exciting ride for the instructor though...
